Deane: Still lots of work to do

One thing I know after my playing my first regular-season game as a professional last week is that I still have to make a lot of improvement and I’ve still got a lot to learn. I’ve got a long way to go.

It’s a long season and I have to make sure I’m getting better every day.Deane_110707.jpg

When you’re going from college to pro, it’s definitely a lot different. When you’re in university, it seems like you have more time to learn the playbook. When you get here, you have to study every day and you have to stay in your playbook all the time. You have to be on top of your game at all times because there’s always somebody there ready to take your spot.

This is a great group of offensive linemen we have here. Every o-line that you’re ever a part of, you’ve got to be tight. The o-line is just one unit. I said it before when I was in college — you’re not a single person when you’re on the o-line. If one person is doing one thing and four other guys are doing a different thing, the play’s not going to work. It’s got to be one unit at all times.

One of the great things about playing here in Calgary is that I’ve got family here and it’s cool to be able to hang out with them. I went to a movie with my brother the other day and hung out with my sister on Sunday. It feels good to get away from football every once in a while and spend some time with my family. It’s like I’ve got another home to go to, so that’s definitely a bonus for me.
