Stampeders lose Grey Cup

The 100th Grey Cup in Toronto, Ontario pitted the Calgary Stampeders (12-6) against the Toronto Argonauts (9-9).

Despite riding a six-game win streak into the show, the Stampeders could not carry the momentum and fell to the hometown Argonauts by a score of 35-22.

Key Calgary mistakes, such as two turnovers that led to scores in the first half, were the main culprit. A number of penalties throughout the game extended Argos drives or made big Toronto plays that much more damaging.

CFL Most Outstanding Player Chad Owens opened the scoring with a five-yard reception for a touchdown in the middle of the first quarter following a Stampeders fumble.

Kevin Glenn was then picked off by Pacino Horne who returned the interception for a touchdown. The Argos added a 16-yard field goal early in second quarter and then Dontrell Inman hauled in a one-yard score to extend the lead to 18 points before the half.

Calgary was forced to settle for two field goals by Rene Paredes, punctuating the Stampeders struggles on offense to get both the run and the pass game working.

The teams entered the half with the Argos ahead 24-6.

The script did not change.

The second half began with the teams exchanging possessions until the Stampeders converted a field goal by Paredes to open the scoring with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Halfway into the fourth stanza on the heels of two Rene Paredes field goals and a conceded safety, the Stampeders were very much in the game down by only 13.

However, damaging penalties on consecutive drives ultimately gave the Argos a short field and led to the crucial touchdown of the game, a 20-point deficit too great for the Stamp to overcome with only five minutes remaining.

The Argos added a rouge and the Stamps added a late touchdown by Maurice Price but the Argonauts walked away Grey Cup champions in their own building by a score of 35-22.

Chad Kackert, who made plays all game en route to recording 133 rushing yards and 62 receiving yards for 195 yards from scrimmage was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player while Argos defensive end Ricky Foley earned Most Outstanding Canadian.
