Recipe for success

Thursday night’s game was simply more of the same for Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps.

The Red and White have now recorded five wins in five games at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field, 14 straight triumphs following a bye dating back to 2005, and 15 victories in their last 16 games versus the Blue Bombers overall.

Moreover, Mitchell’s first career start – also a win – came on July 26, 2013 on the road against none other than the Bombers.

But most importantly, the fourth-year quarterback did his part in keeping those streaks in tact on this particular occasion, leading his squad to a dominant 33-18 performance in Manitoba.

Asked to explain the aforementioned dominance as of late, Mitchell offered some rather simple explanations for the impressive statistical feats.

“They’ve been struggling the last couple years and we haven’t,” stated Mitchell, alluding to Calgary’s 45 regular-season wins since the start of 2013 compared to a mere 16 by the Blue Bombers. “The majority of the teams in the league that you look at off the bye, it’s going to be a pretty high (winning) percentage because you have two weeks to prepare for a team and you should win (the) game.”

Throwing for over 300 yards while connecting with seven different receivers in the Week 5 encounter, Mitchell was quick to credit his extensive cast of pass catchers. In particular, Marquay McDaniel tallied seven receptions for 80 yards and a first-quarter touchdown.

“I thought all the guys played really good,” Mitchell commented. “I think everybody’s kind of stepping into their own right now. Marquay’s always been a rock for us and always will be and teams have got to game-plan to take him away. When they do, other guys get opened up. They still kind of game-planned to take him away and he still had a huge game.”

Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, Bakari Grant, Tory Harrison, Jerome Messam, Anthony Parker and Greg Wilson also registered receptions for the Stampeders.

Mitchell and the Stamps also managed to capitalize off of four Bombers’ turnovers, scoring a total of 19 points in the process, highlighted by a Joe Burnett pick-six in the fourth quarter.

The first change of possession that went in Calgary’s favour immediately followed a turnover of their own, as Grant coughed up the football before Fred Bennett reclaimed pigskin just a few plays later.

“It was actually really funny – Bakari fumbled and (Alex) Singleton says, ‘Hey man, don’t worry, we’re going to get it back here in one play,’” recounted No. 19. “I kind of laughed, chuckled a little bit, and two plays later they get the ball back. He was like, ‘Oh, my bad man, second play. It should have been the first play.’ That’s just the mindset our team has – to create turnovers and help each other out. That’s how teams win.”
