Patience pays off

Down 41-26 in the fourth quarter with 2:19 left to play, many Stampeders fans in the stands began to leave to try and beat the traffic and start their long weekend.

Unfortunately for them, the Stampeders were far from done and they missed a heck of a finish that will go down as an instant classic and a lesson in perseverance.

The comeback was started when receiver Greg Wilson, getting his opportunity to show what he can do in place for the injured Joe West, hauled in his second touchdown of the night – a 42-yard gem from Bo Levi Mitchell.

“Really, when I caught it, I wasn’t thinking (comeback),” says Wilson reflecting on the play that served as a catalyst for a furious 15-point fourth quarter comeback that would force overtime, leading to the Calgary victory.

“When I caught it and turned around, all I thought was ‘Let’s go, we’re in this.’ ”

Wilson described how there was no sense of panic on the Stamps sideline as time was winding down, no heads hanging in defeat as players had to try and stay patient and be ready when their moment came to make a play.

If anything, players were getting antsy, wanting to be the one to turn the whole game around in one big moment, says Wilson.

While it took a full team effort and more than just one big play, Wilson is proud of how his teammates responded, never getting down and believing they still had a chance.

“It just shows how resilient we are and how much fight we have, how much belief we have in each other,” he says. “No matter what, no matter how much we’re down, we have what it takes to come back and dig down deep to go out and get a ‘W.’ ”

Two starts into his 2016 season, Wilson feels he’s finally able to show he can contribute, the way he always believed he could.

The speedster has two impressive touchdowns on seven receptions for a total of 155 yards. Early on, he’s shown good chemistry with Mitchell and is able to use his blinding speed to his advantage.

The Stamps now prepare for a short week that sees them match up with Saskatchewan on Thursday at McMahon and while the Riders may be struggling early in the season, Wilson knows they can’t be taken lightly and if he hopes to continue his early success as a viable option on offence, he’ll need stay in top form.

“Now I just have to rest up, get my body ready to go, get some good practice days in there and go beat Sask,” he says.
