Stamps victorious over Riders

With a 19-10 road win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Calgary Stampeders bode farewell to Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night with their second straight triumph over the Riders.

Bo Levi Mitchell’s streak of 21 straight games with a touchdown pass came to an end despite totalling nearly 300 yards through the air.

The hard-fought win keeps Calgary atop the West Division at 5-1-1 while the Roughriders sit at 1-6 with the loss.

“Both teams, I thought, were a little sloppy with the ball and made more mistakes than plays,” says head coach Dave Dickenson. “But the effort on both sides was tremendous. There was a lot of fight. Both teams wanted it. We were able to just make a few more plays at the end. I’m proud of our guys to show up in a hostile building and handle a tough game, especially when they’re not even close to their best. To still come out with a win, that was big.”

The Stampeders were forced to punt on their opening possession, but Saskatchewan was also unable to pick up any points on their first drive as Joe Burnett broke up a pass intended for Naaman Roosevelt.

Finding the scoreboard on the next series for the Stamps was Rene Paredes, knocking through a 46-yard attempt. Paredes’ 17th consecutive made field goal was set up with a Marquay McDaniel reception of 19 yards.

In the early stages of the second quarter, another Burnett knockdown forced a 40-yard field goal try from Roughriders rookie Quinn Van Gylswyk. But the ball hooked wide right, and the Riders remained scoreless with a Roy Finch return to Calgary’s 27-yard line.

Paredes would eventually come on for a 40-yard kick of his own to double the lead.

On Saskatchewan’s next offensive play from scrimmage, Frank Beltre registered his first sack since Week 1 when the defensive lineman was left unblocked for a free run at Darian Durant.

A Jerome Messam catch out of the backfield shortly thereafter would go for 19 yards and move the visitors inside the red zone. Unable to find the end zone, a third three-pointer from Paredes gave the Stamps a 9-0 advantage with 3:27 remaining before the break.

In the final minute of the second quarter, Durant located Ricky Collins deep downfield for a gain of 35 yards. The Calgary defensive front then appeared to close out the half with a goal line stand, but an offside call gave the Roughriders one more play, and reserve pivot Mitchell Gale was able to cross the plain.

Early in the third, Josh Bartel’s 65-yard punt sailed over the head of Finch, but the shifty returner weaved his way for 44 yards to provide excellent starting field position for Mitchell’s unit.

The opportunity was seized with a two-yard touchdown run from Messam after back-to-back connections between Mitchell and McDaniel.

Charleston Hughes then got in on the sack tally before Van Gylswyk spilt the uprights from 54-yards out for the first successful field goal of his career.

A desperate attempt by Mitchell to move the chains on second down saw the quarterback pitch the ball to Messam for an astounding scamper of 61 yards. However, the bruising tailback would be stripped by Buddy Jackson of Riders for an instant swing in momentum.

And the turnovers didn’t stop there, as Ja’Gared Davis forced a Durant fumble prior to Justin Cox intercepting Mitchell on an errant heave.

The six-point advantage was maintained when Van Gylswyk’s 40-yard kick deflected off the post.

Immediately afterwards, Mitchell stayed in the pocket to take a hit in order to locate Simon Charbonneau-Campeau for 64 yards. Paredes would put it out of reach with a field goal of 21 yards as just 1:01 remained on the clock.

Calgary will now prepare for the second-place Lions on Friday night when the two sides battle it out at BC Place. Kickoff is 8 p.m. MDT.
