With a 37-9 victory from Vancouver’s BC Place on Friday night, the Calgary Stampeders led from beginning to end in defeating the BC Lions to remain the West Division’s top seed at 6-1-1.

“It was a good win against a great opponent,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. “I think BC will be there in the end and I know that it just wasn’t their night. Most of the time you think you played really well and then you watch the film and it wasn’t as good as you thought it was. It’s just a good win at this point in the season and we’re moving forward.”

Bo Levi Mitchell connected with nine different pass catchers en route to the Stamps wrapping up the 2016 season-series versus the Leos in the their third and final regular-season meeting.

The game’s initial play from scrimmage saw Mitchell survey the field before spotting Anthony Parker for a 33-yard gain. Mitchell would then connect with Bakari Grant for a touchdown of 21 yards and Parker was credited with the ensuing two-point conversion.

In response to the Stamps early scoring drive, Bryan Burnham’s 42-yard catch-and-run enabled Richie Leone’s 37-yard field goal to set the score at 8-3.

Then, a desperation tackle on special teams by Rob Cote prevented a possible punt-return touchdown by Chris Rainey, who was still able to provide the Lions with excellent field position. However, an eventual field goal try by Leone would sail outside the left upright.

DaVaris Daniels, a rookie receiver for the Stamps making his season debut, recorded his first career reception as the opening quarter expired.

Three first-down receptions from Marquay McDaniel would continue the possession into the second stanza. Rene Paredes’ 45-yard kick to conclude the series not only created an eight-point advantage, but also marked his 21st straight successful attempt.

When the Calgary defence next took the field, the combination of Deron Mayo and Charleston Hughes nearly teamed up to intercept Jonathon Jennings near the goal line, but the ball fell incomplete. Leone then trotted on to knock through a chip shot of 20 yards with 8:02 remaining before the half.

Immediately afterwards, the Stampeders running back duo of Tory Harrison and Jerome Messam totaled 44 yards both along the ground and through the air as the Stamps meticulously marched down the field. Finishing things off in style was fellow running back Rob Cote, as his 100th CFL catch added six more points for the visitors. In addition, it was his first scoring major since early November of 2014.

Only 43 seconds were left in the first half when Leone tacked on his third field goal, this time from 26 yards out.

On the second half’s opening kickoff, Frank Beltre stripped Rainey of the football with Ben D’Aguilar recovering the fumble. Two plays later, Messam walked in untouched for a five-yard TD run.

Calgary found the scoreboard once again when Paredes nailed a 42-yard boot for a 27-9 lead.

In the final frame, Andrew Buckley’s quarterback sneak allowed the Stampeders to surpass the 30-point plauteau. Travis Lulay then entered the contest in relief of Jennings after the starting pivot managed only 10 completions in over three quarters of work.

The scoring concluded with a Paredes field goal of 26 yards, and Drew Tate would replace Mitchell under centre as time ticked down.

With a matchup against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats slated for Sunday, Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. MDT, the Stamps will return home in Week 10 for an East-West showdown.
