A Sunday showdown will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visit McMahon Stadium to take on the Calgary Stampeders and officially conclude the Stamps’ first half of the 2016 season. Kickoff for the Week 10 affair is slated for 5 p.m. MDT.
The West-leading Stampeders sit at 6-1-1 and have not suffered a loss since the season-opener in Vancouver. The Ticats are currently tied for second place with Toronto at 4-4 and are one point behind the RedBlacks for top spot in the East Division.
Both teams are coming off impressive outings last weekend, with the Stamps pouncing on the Lions 37-9 and the Tiger-Cats dominating the Roughriders by a score of 53-7.
Calgary will be putting their undefeated home record on the line while Hamilton has won three of their five road games thus far.
The two sides have yet to square off this season after the Red and White claimed both matchups with the Ticats in 2015 by a combined total of just four points. In fact, the Stamps have only faced an Eastern representative on one occasion this year – a road date with the RedBlacks that concluded in a 26-26 tie.
Leading the league in points scored per game (31.0) and fewest points allowed per game (20.1), the Stamps will be facing a Hamilton squad the sits No. 1 in opponents’ yards per play (5.4) opponents’ net offence (307.3 yards per game).
Derek Wiggan will be returning to the lineup for the first time since late July with fellow Canadian defensive lineman Quinn Smith unable to go.
A significant milestone that will be reached on Sunday is the 100th career appearance for Stampeders punter Rob Maver. The University of Guelph alum has punted for nearly 25,000 yards over six-plus seasons.
Meanwhile, fellow special-teamer Rene Paredes leads the CFL in scoring and is two points shy of 100 on the year.
Also of note is the fact that both teams won their most recent Grey Cup championship against one another. Hamilton beat Calgary in 1999 before the Stamps returned the favour in 2014.
Key Matchup
Expect the spotlight to shine brightest on the two quarterbacks with Bo Levi Mitchell and Zach Collaros leading their respective offences. Calgary’s Mitchell has thrown 14 touchdowns against a mere four interceptions and Collaros of the Tiger-Cats has tossed seven TDs and been picked off only once in two games since returning from a torn ACL.
