Mitchell, Paredes named players of the month

Two members of the Calgary Stampeders have been honoured by the Canadian Football League as players of the month for August. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and kicker Rene Paredes make up two-thirds of the group recognized in the CFL’s monthly awards.

Mitchell led the Stamps to victories in all four August games as he completed 98 of 143 passes for 1,273 yards with four touchdowns, a pair of two-point converts and just one interception. Mitchell passed the 300-yard milestone in three of the four games and fell just short in the other as he amassed 298 yards in an Aug. 13 win in Saskatchewan.

For the season, Mitchell has completed 225 of 335 passes for 2,857 yards with 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions in leading the Stamps to a league-best 7-1-1 record.

Meanwhile, Paredes was perfect on all 17 of his field-goal attempts in August including two games in which he went five-for-five. The veteran also kicked six extra points and had a total of 57 points during the month.

Paredes, who leads the CFL scoring race with 114 points, is on an active streak of 28 consecutive successful field goals. Only two streaks in league history — including Paredes’ own record run of 39 in a row — have been longer.

This is the first player-of-the-month awards this season for Stamps players, who had previously received four player-of-the-week awards from the CFL.
