Red and White win in OT

In the Labour Day rematch from the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, the Calgary Stampeders stormed back for a 34-28 overtime triumph over the Edmonton Eskimos.

The fourth-quarter rally enabled the Stamps to improve to 9-1-1 and push their unbeaten streak to 10.

An early punt by Rob Maver pinned the Esks deep in their own territory, but Mike Reilly promptly found Derel Walker for a 104-touchdown on Edmonton’s first offensive play from scrimmage.

The Eskimos appeared to be on the verge of adding a Sean Whyte field goal on their following offensive series, but Jordan Lynch fumbled the snap and threw an incomplete pass, thus committing a turnover on downs.

With just over two minutes left in the opening quarter, the Stampeder defence stuffed the run lane of John White on third-and-short for another change of possession. But just two plays later, Deon Lacey took the ball right back as he intercepted Bo Levi Mitchell near the midfield stripe.

Adarius Bowman’s 26-yard touchdown enabled Edmonton to capitalize off the Red and White’s miscue and gave the home side a 14-0 lead.

Later on, a clutch second-down conversion via Bakari Grant preceded a 40-yard field goal from Rene Paredes to pull with 10 points of the Green and Gold.

Picking up 32 yards on a catch out of the backfield was White in response to the Paredes three-pointer. Whyte then recorded a field goal of his own from 11 yards out.

As time expired, Paredes’ consecutive-field-goal streak ended at 32 with a 47-yard try.

In the third, Junior Turner dropped Reilly for a loss of nine yards and the game’s first sack.

On Calgary’s initial drive of the second half, a Grant gain of 27 yards moved the Stamps into the red zone, but the visitors would eventually settle for a 22-yard boot by Paredes.

Shortly thereafter an 11-play, 66-yard Eskimos sequence was finished off with a Whyte field goal of 16 yards.

But the Stampeders would answer back with their first major of the evening, as Mitchell located a patient Daniels in the end zone for a 30-yard TD. Anthony Parker helped set up the score with back-to-back contributions of a 14-yard rush and a 16-yard reception.

John White’s fumble immediately following a negated sack by Ja’Gared Davis was forced by Shaquille Richardson and recovered by Josh Bell. The two teams then headed to the fourth quarter with only a converted touchdown separating the Alberta rivals.

After a miraculous first down picked up by Roy Finch on second-and-20, Daniels eluded two defenders to haul in beautiful touch-pass from Mitchell. The touchdown of 27 yards tied up the contest with under 11 minutes to go.

The Esks marched down the field to wind down the clock, and but Whyte’s 52-yard attempt fell short of the uprights, as the teams headed for overtime.

Calgary will next take on the Ottawa RedBlacks at McMahon Stadium on Saturday, September 17. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. MDT.

In the extra session, a pass interference penalty assessed to Stampeders defensive back Tommie Campbell placed the ball at the one-yard line. Reilly would cross the goal line from there, and the mandatory two-point convert attempt was good, thanks to a Nate Coehoorn snag.

With the Stamps forced to match the Eskimos eight points, Edmonton’s Cord Pass committed pass interference of his own, enabling Andrew Buckley to score six on a one-yard sneak. Also needing the two-pointer, Daniels made the 13-yard reception in the end zone to send it to double-overtime.

Grant’s corner-route for a 23-yard touchdown in the second extra session was not followed up with a successful two-point try.  The Esks were then unable to convert on a third-and-two effort as the battle finally came to an end.
