Stamps fans asked to share the warmth

The Calgary Stampeders ask their fans to remember the less-fortunate members of the community who don’t have suitable winter wear as the club, with the support of radio station Q107, launches its 14th annual Share the Warmth coat drive in support of The Salvation Army.

The collection of new or gently used winter coats will take place during Saturday’s game at McMahon Stadium as the Stamps play host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

Salvation Army volunteers will be stationed outside each stadium entrance and there will also be a collection point at the end of the LRT walkway on the east side of the stadium. Fans can also make a cash donation if they prefer.

The goal is to set a new coat-drive record for a third consecutive season. A total 5,100 jackets were collected during last year’s coat drive as well as in the days leading up to the game through school and workplace campaigns. That brought the all-time donation totals to 20,700 coats.

“I thank Stamps fans for their tremendous support of the Salvation Army Coat Drive and I know they will come through again this year,” said Stampeders quarterback Drew Tate, who has been a team representative for the coat drive since 2011.

Tate and defensive back Brandon Smith both serve as program reps for The Salvation Army and they and several of their teammates will visit the Centre of Hope in the near future to help distribute the collected jackets to those in need.
