KJ keeps the faith

With a substantial assist from Kamar Jorden, the Calgary Stampeders kept a good thing going.

In fact, multiple things.

The receiver’s nine grabs for 126 yards enabled the Red and White to protect their perfect record at home through seven, extend their winning streak to 10 and push their unbeaten run to 12. Having taken the field for the final time this month, Calgary was not dealt a single loss in July, August or September.

Despite holding a 23-point lead into the final stages of the third, the services of Rene Paredes were desperately required for a game-winning field goal after Winnipeg had climbed in front with 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of play.

“Crazy,” said Jorden when asked to sum up the 36-34 victory over the Blue Bombers. “That’s the only way to describe it. But in Rene we trust.”

Jorden was first to put points on the scoreboard with a five-yard touchdown as he fought off Bruce Johnson to make the contested catch.

“I really just wanted to run with speed and just give Bo (Levi Mitchell) an opportunity to see me early and give me a chance,” the Darby, Penn., product explained. “That’s exactly what he did and, once the ball was in the air, I just had to go up and get it with my hands.”

Outscored 27-9 in the final frame, the Stamps seemed sluggish out of the break, but were able to remain patient and trust the process.

“We just didn’t come out on fire (in the second half),” the Bowling Green grad stated. “And not even just the offence – everybody. We started out just seeing how things were going and then we got back on pace just doing what we do. Our offence got back into it and the defence settled down, too.”

After Julian Feoli-Gudino of the Bombers crossed the goal line and the Bombers made the convert to take a one-point advantage, the Stampeders knew they had little time to operate. Yet it proved to be just enough.

“We knew we were only down one,” remarked Jorden after recording the first 100-yard performance of his career. “We know Rene is a great kicker and we know Roy (Finch) is a great kick returner. We had faith that we could get down there and we knew that we had a good 20 seconds, which is an eternity here (in the CFL). Bo was able to throw the ball and it was a great catch by Lemar (Durant). It was nerve-wracking and I was super nervous, but we definitely have the team to make those types of plays in those clutch situations.”

The longest play made by the fourth-year Stamp went for 29 yards, although his late 14-yard snag was crucial in moving the Stampeders into field-goal position. Durant then picked up the final yardage needed to bring on Paredes.

And according to No. 88, was the outcome ever in doubt with the home team relying on right foot of Paredes at the 52-yard line?

“In order to sound like the best teammate, I’ll say no,” the 27-year-old said with a laugh. “There was no doubt in my mind at all. I knew he was going to make it.”
