Red and White hold on for victory

After it appeared as though the Calgary Stampeders were on their way to a one-sided win, the Stamps hung on for a 36-34 over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Calgary, now 11-1-1 on the year, remains undefeated at home through six contests. With only East Division opponents remaining on their regular-season schedule, the Stamps picked up nine out of a possible 10 wins versus West competition.

Bo Levi Mitchell found Kamar Jorden in space for a pickup of 34 yards on the game’s first play from scrimmage. A subsequent 19-yard snag by Marquay McDaniel led to a strong-handed touchdown catch courtesy of Jorden from five yards out.

Winnipeg’s initial offensive series was put to a premature end due in large part to a first-down sack via Derek Wiggan.

The Stamps added to their early lead when Rene Paredes knocked through a 27-yard field goal less than eight minutes into the opening quarter.

As the second stanza commenced, Lemar Durant was left all alone just beyond the goal line for a 14-yard score. Mitchell then lobbed a pass over the top for Rob Cote on the two-point conversion attempt to go up by 18 points.

Midway through the frame, Zach Minter registered a quarterback takedown of Matt Nichols behind the line of scrimmage before Jamar Wall picked off the Bombers pivot just seconds later. Capitalizing off the turnover and adding to the resounding lead was Jerome Messam, who plowed his way up the middle for a 15-yard TD run.

Putting the Blue Bombers on the board before the break with a scamper of 59 yards was Timothy Flanders, who went untouched to the end zone through the heart of the Stamps defence.

Messam’s ensuing fumble took a friendly bounce into the red zone where Daniels managed to pounce on the pigskin in order to retain possession. Another three points would be added with a 17-yard kick from Paredes.

High-pointing the ball in the early stages of the third was Durant who was then brought down at the midfield stripe. But the unit would be forced to settle for a field goal try, and Paredes spilt the uprights from 47 yards out.

Later on, a screen pass to Flanders went for 18 yards, moving the chains for the visitors. Weston Dressler’s touchdown five plays later was successfully overturned with a Stamps challenge flag, but Clarence Denmark’s consequent six-point effort would stand.

Near the conclusion of the quarter, Ryan Smith wrestled a reception away from Calgary defender Tommie Campbell for a gain of 40 yards.

A one-yard sneak by Nichols preceded Winnipeg’s two-point convert try, but the attempt was no good, and the point differential remained at 10.

It was quickly reduced yet again, however, as Simon Charbonneau-Campeau coughed up possession and Shayon Green’s lateral to Khalil Bass resulted in a 16-yard scoop-and-score.

Calgary’s nine-play, 50-yard drive near the end of the fourth ended with a 37-yard field goal. Julian Feoli-Gudino scored the go-ahead touchdown with 20 seconds left on the clock, but Paredes nailed a 52-yarder as time expired to escape unscathed.

Calgary will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a trip out east to Tim Hortons Field where they will take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 2 p.m. MDT.
