Steeltown showdown

The Calgary Stampeders will travel to Southern Ontario in Week 15 to tangle with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Steeltown showdown gets underway from Tim Hortons Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT.

Calgary continues to sit atop the CFL standings at 11-1-1 and has gone 4-1-1 in six games played away from the friendly confines of McMahon Stadium. Hamilton, sitting in second place among East teams at 6-7 overall, is 3-2 as the host side in 2016.

The Stamps are 2-0-1 when pitted against the East and the Hamilton is 2-6 in West encounters, but both squads have shined in intra-divisional play. The Stampeders and Tiger-Cats are a combined 13-2 when pitted against clubs from their respective divisions.

When the Red and White first faced Hamilton at the Ticats’ recently-completed stadium a season ago, Calgary escaped with a three-point win. Rene Paredes, just as he did last Saturday against the Blue Bombers, nailed a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Saskatchewan recently downed the Tiger-Cats when yet another field goal was scored in the final seconds, this time by former Stamp Tyler Crapigna. It was Hamilton’s second loss in their past three games.

This week’s midday matchup will be the second meeting of the season between Calgary and Hamilton. On Aug. 28, the Stampeders took care of the Tabbies by a score of 30-24. The Stamps had five players record at least 40 receiving yards including running back Jerome Messam and rookie wideout DaVaris Daniels, who tallied the first 100-yard performance of his young career.

Tied for first in rushing touchdowns with 16 and trailing only the Tiger-Cats in terms of passing majors with 24, Calgary sits No. 1 with 44 total TDs – six more than their upcoming counterparts.

Other notable statistics include the Ticats having recorded 41 quarterback sacks while the Stampeders have only allowed a mere 13. In addition, the Stampeders’ 14 turnovers committed are a CFL low. Hamilton has prematurely lost possession on 35 occasions, a league-high.

Randy Richards and Quinn Smith are expected to draw into the lineup this week, with Dan Federkeil and Zach Minter subtracted as a result.

Key Matchup

A pair of 5-foot-7 kick returners will be on full display, as Roy Finch of the Stamps and Brandon Banks of the Tiger-Cats are simply two of the best. Both special-teamers have scored a punt-return touchdown this season with the runbacks each going for at least 85 yards. Through 13 appearances apiece, Finch’s 59-yard kickoff return against the Lions is the league’s longest this season while Banks is not far back in that department, returning a kickoff for 54 yards in early July.
