Calgary Stampeders vs Montreal Alouettes
PinkPower Presented by TELUS
McMahon Stadium
Saturday, Oct. 15
5 p.m. kickoff
At McMahon Stadium on Saturday evening, the Calgary Stampeders will entertain the Montreal Alouettes in Week 17 action.
It’s their first matchup of the season as Montreal is the only squad the Stampeders have yet to face.
In the 2015 campaign, the Als downed the Stamps 29-11 in Quebec before Calgary earned revenge nearly one month later with a 25-22 victory in Southern Alberta.
Calgary enters the action riding a 12-game winning streak at 13-1-1 overall. The Alouettes are 4-10 having recorded a single win since late August. Undefeated on home field through seven games, the Stampeders will be hosting a Montreal squad that is 2-4 away from Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
The Red and White have secured hosting the Western Final on Nov. 20 while the Alouettes, faced with assuming the role of visitor for three of their last four contests, are fighting for their playoff lives.
Both teams are coming off a mere four days’ rest having been on opposite ends of blowout losses on Thanksgiving Monday. With a 48-20 triumph in Toronto, Calgary was in front from beginning to end. Earlier in the day, the Als dropped a 40-20 decision to the visiting Eskimos.
Montreal has scored the second-fewest points in the CFL whereas Calgary leads the league with 525 points, 71 more than any other club. Defensively, the Stampeders and Alouettes are setting the pace in regard to points conceded, with the Stamps allowing just 331 and the Als not far behind at 346.
Marquay McDaniel of the Stamps and Montreal’s Duron Carter are both on the verge of surpassing 1,000 receiving yards this season. McDaniel’s 993 yards is good for eighth position among all players and Carter’s 938 have him one spot back.
A paltry 14 sacks have been given up by the Stampeders in 15 games. Meanwhile, the Stamps defensive line, fresh off a six-sack performance, will be looking to exploit a Montreal unit that has surrendered a total of 47 quarterback takedowns.
Sunday, Oct. 30 will see the cross-country foes squaring off out east in the Stampeders final regular-season appearance before a Week 20 bye.
Running back Tory Harrison, offensive lineman Pierre Lavertu, receiver Jamal Nixon and defensive back Dexter Janke will be put on the 46-man roster while Juwan Brescacin and returner Roy Finch go to the one-game injury list.
Key Matchup
Alouettes middle linebacker Bear Woods, currently No. 2 in tackles with 102, will be tasked with containing top rusher Jerome Messam. Messam’s 2016 totals of 1,002 rushing yards and 11 major scores are unequaled, although Woods has assisted in limiting Messam to 71 yards and zero trips to the end zone after two career encounters.
