With a 22-8 win over the visiting Montreal Alouettes on Saturday night, the Calgary Stampeders improved to 14-1-1 in 2016 and maintained their perfect record at home through eight games.

The Alouettes tallied just 161 yards of total offence, completing only 13 passes in the process.

Micah Johnson’s opening-series sack forced a Montreal punt before Anthony Parker picked up 14 yards on Calgary initial offensive play.

Responding with a quarterback takedown of his own was John Bowman of the Alouettes, stripping Bo Levi Mitchell in the process as Jerome Messam to pounce on the loose ball. The Stamps Rob Maver then came on for a 61-yard punt which was not returned across the goal line for a 1-0 Stampeders lead.

On the following drive, Rakeem Cato was dropped by Johnson for the second time in the game’s first seven minutes.

The sacks kept coming in the second quarter when Ja’Gared Davis forced Cato to lose possession, enabling Cordarro Law to claim the recovery. But the Stamps were unable to capitalize apart from a second Maver rouge.

A 15-yard catch-and-run by Stefan Logan preceded a picture-perfect pass breakup from Tommie Campbell in defence of Duron Carter.

Midway through the frame, Logan made an over-the-shoulder catch to reel in a Maver punt and promptly turned upfield for a 42-yard return.

Kamar Jorden and DaVaris Daniels made two receptions apiece prior to the two-minute warning until Marquay McDaniel snagged one of his own. Finishing off the 12-play, 93-yard sequence in style was a Parker crossing route for an 11-yard touchdown.

Attempting a 43-yard field goal on the final snap of the half, Rene Paredes’ try sailed wide left.

As the third commenced, Messam dashed to his left for 27 yards, and an end-around to Parker on the very next play was good for 19 yards. Paredes would soon rebound from his earlier miss with a 25-yard kick between uprights.

Hitting pay dirt later on from one yard out, third-stringer Andrew Buckley followed his blockers and scampered to his right. The Stampeders had a 20-0 advantage once Jerome Messam sneaked out of the backfield on the successful two-point conversion.
Montreal punter Boris Bede conceded two points early on in the final stanza after yet another Stamps sack, this time courtesy of Quinn Smith.

Making his CFL debut, Jamal Nixon was unable to secure a Bede punt, enabling Seydou Haidara, Jr. to provide the Als with prime field position. However, the stingy Calgary defence would go on to force a three-and-out. The unit would do so twice more in succession for three straight turnovers on downs.

The shutout bid was denied with an intentional grounding infraction committed in the end zone by Bo Levi Mitchell that resulted in a conceded safety.

Brandon Rutley’s two-yard plunge with 20 seconds remaining pulled the Alouettes to within 14, but that was as close and they would come.
