Stamps face RedBlacks in Grey Cup

The Calgary Stampeders will take on the Ottawa RedBlacks in the 104th Grey Cup on Sunday at Toronto’s BMO Field. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. MST.

It’s the third time Calgary and Ottawa have squared off for the championship, with all three games taking place in Toronto. The first two meetings occurred when the team in the Nation’s Capital was known as the Rough Riders.

In 1948 at Varsity Stadium, the Stamps won their first Grey Cup title and completed an undefeated season by beating Ottawa 12-7. Twenty years later at Exhibition Stadium, the Rough Riders prevailed by a score of 24-21.

Calgary advanced to the championship game with a 42-15 thumping of the BC Lions in the Western Final at McMahon Stadium. Ottawa won the East with a 35-23 home-field win over the Edmonton Eskimos.

There are plenty of familiar faces for Stamps fans in the Ottawa organization starting with the men who lead the RedBlacks on the field — quarterback Henry Burris is the Stamps’ all-time leading passer — and on the sidelines — head coach Rick Campbell was part of Calgary’s coaching staff for three seasons including two as defensive coordinator.

This is the 15th trip to the Grey Cup in Stamps history and Calgary is seeking its eighth championship.
