Jan. 27John Hufnagel, having just turned head-coaching duties to Dave Dickenson, is named president of the Stampeders. He will also continue to serve as the club’s general manager.

May 9 – The Stampeders sign a trio of players. One — running back Reggie Whatley — doesn’t make it out of training camp but the other two wound up making huge contributions to the Calgary cause in 2016.

Running back/return man Roy Finch broke the franchise’s single-season record for punt returns yards including an 85-yard touchdown in the Labour Day Classic.

The other, receiver DaVaris Daniels, spends the first eight weeks of the season on the practice roster but then quickly makes up for lost time, registering 885 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 11 regular-season games. He was eventually named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie.

May 10 – The day after making those key signings, the Stamps make their selections in the 2016 CFL draft.

Calgary picks up a couple of key pieces – lanky receiver Juwan Brescacin in the second round and Pierre-Luc Caron, who would take over as the club’s new long-snapper, in the fifth – but the plum of the draft was linebacker Alex Singleton with the sixth pick overall.

Singleton starts the season as a special-teamer and part-time defensive player but by Week 5 he was the starting middle linebacker. If not for the performance of teammate and fellow freshman DaVaris Daniels, Singleton would have been a viable candidate for the league’s top-rookie award.

July 1 — In their home-opener, the Stamps down the Blue Bombers to provide rookie head coach Dave Dickenson with his first victory as Calgary’s bench boss. Bo Levi Mitchell throws touchdown passes to Marquay McDaniel and Simon Charbonneau-Campeau while Jerome Messam rushes for 137 yards.

July 8 – The Stamps battle to a 26-26 draw with the RedBlacks at Ottawa’s TD Place Stadium and head into their first bye of the season with a 1-1-1 record. They return from the bye and rattle off 14 consecutive victories.

July 29 – The Stamps erase a 15-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to force overtime and go on to beat the BC Lions 44-41 at McMahon Stadium. A couple of key interceptions were part of the comeback story for the Stamps as Ciante Evans’ pick set up the game-tying score at the end of regulation and Tommie Campbell’s interception in overtime sealed the result.

Sept. 24Rene Paredes connected on a 52-yard field goal as time expired to give the Stamps a 36-34 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers had scored the go-ahead touchdown with 20 seconds left in the game but the Stamps offence had just enough time to move into position for a field-goal attempt.

Oct. 1 – In their first game after the death of defensive back Mylan Hicks in an act of violence outside a Calgary nightspot, the Stamps record an emotional 36-17 victory at Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field.

The players all wore stickers with Hicks’ No. 31 on their helmets and many of them wore additional tributes on their faces, arms, towels or shoes. In honour of the fellow defensive back, Jamar Wall trades in his No. 29 jersey for 31 and wears it for the remainder of the season.

Hicks’ locker at McMahon Stadium was left intact.

Oct. 21 – In their final regular-season home date, the Stamps thump the Toronto Argonauts 31-13 to push their record to 15-1-1 and increase their standings point total to a franchise record of 31. The previous record had been 30 set on four occasions.

Bo Levi Mitchell and DaVaris Daniels hooked up for a pair of passing touchdowns for the Red and White. Also, Stamps rookie Andrew Buckley tied Russ Jackson’s 54-year CFL single-season record for most rushing TDs by a Canadian quarterback by finding the end zone for an eighth time.

Oct. 30Jerome Messam clinches the CFL rushing title, becoming the 10th different Stamps player to lead the league in rushing yards. Three of those Stamps rushing kings — Messam, Jon Cornish and Joffrey Reynolds — have combined to win six rushing titles in the past nine years.

Nov. 20 – Concerns about a three-week layoff heading into the Western Final prove unfounded as the quick-starting Stamps rush out to a 32-0 halftime lead en route to a 42-15 win over the BC Lions. The win allows the Stamps to become the first Calgary team to go a combined 10-0 at home in regular-season and playoff play during a season.

In a touching coincidence, Jamar Wall picks off a Jonathan Jennings pass late in the first half and returns it 42 yards for a touchdown that made the score 31-0 before the extra point. That matched the 31 that Wall was wearing on his jersey in tribute to fallen teammate Mylan Hicks.

Nov. 24 – The Stamps have a big night at the CFL’s awards show, winning all five of the trophies for which they were finalists.

The Calgary winners include DaVaris Daniels (Most Outstanding Rookie), Derek Dennis (Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman), Jerome Messam (Most Outstanding Canadian), Bo Levi Mitchell (Most Outstanding Player) and Dave Dickenson (coach of the year).

Nov. 27 – The dream season comes to a heartbreaking end as the Stamps’ bid for a last-minute comeback win falls a couple of yards short and Calgary winds up on the wrong end of a 39-33 overtime final against the Ottawa RedBlacks in the 104th Grey Cup at Toronto’s BMO Field.

Calgary forced extra time by outscoring Ottawa 26-13 in the second half but a potential game-winning drive stalled at the RedBlacks’ two-yard line and the Stamps had to settle for a game-tying field goal. Ottawa scored a major on its first overtime possession and the Stamps were unable to match.

Dec. 7 – The Stamps set a franchise record by placing nine players on the CFL all-star team. The group includes quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, running back Jerome Messam, offensive linemen Derek Dennis and Spencer Wilson, defensive linemen Micah Johnson and Charleston Hughes and defensive backs Ciante Evans, Tommie Campbell and Jamar Wall.

Dec. 21 — The Stamps sign defensive end Charleston Hughes to a two-year contract extension. Hughes, who already has nine seasons as a Stamp under his belt, heads into 2017 11 sacks behind Will Johnson for the franchise’s all-time record in that category.
