Getting to know… Brandon Smith

Defensive back Brandon Smith is entering his 10th season with the Red and White. He and defensive end Charleston Hughes both came to Calgary in 2008 and are currently the longest-serving Stampeders.

Smith played his first game on June 26, 2008, against the BC Lions and played his 100th game on July 18, 2015, against Winnipeg.

He was the team’s nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2011 when he led the Stampeders with 65 tackles and was a CFL all-star in 2014 when he again led the team, this time with a career-high 85 tackles.

The two-time Grey Cup champ is an active in the Calgary community during the season and is the player rep for the Every Yard Counts program, presented by Shane Homes.

Smith lettered in football, track and basketball in high school in Oakland and returns to the Bay Area every off-season where he works as an accountant.

Do you have a pre-game ritual?

I clip my finger nails before every game.

What piece of equipment are you fussiest about?

Gloves. I don’t like them too tight on the top of my hands. I’ve got to have some good mobility.
