Stamps fight off Trojans to finish undefeated

Well, it’s official: the Stamps scored a perfect 10.

Wednesday’s journey to the town of Crossfield saw the TELUS Stampeders Basketball Program take down the WG Murdoch Trojans to cap off their 2017 campaign with a 10th victory in 10 appearances.

The roster out in Crossfield included Andrew Buckley, Ben D’Aguilar, Rob Maver, Spencer Wilson and Anthony Woodson in addition to Stamps’ assistant equipment manager Gord Taillefer.

Thanks to jump shots from Maver and stellar guard play by Buckley, the Red and White finished their season in style with a 52-38 win. The size and skill of the senior boys and girls representing the Trojans was impressive, yet not quite enough to upset the Stampeders.

Leading the squad all the way to a perfect record was linebacker Deron Mayo, who transitioned into a coaching role this year with the TELUS Stampeders Basketball Program due to injury.

A young student sang the Canadian national anthem prior to tip-off in front of a captive audience. Meanwhile, Ralph the Dog got the crowd involved from beginning to end.

Hayley and Dallas, selected as the Trojans’ players of the game, were awarded with tickets to an upcoming Calgary Roughnecks game along with a critter, selfie stick and calendar from TELUS.

March Madness for the Stamps saw a total of 12 players and four members of the football operations staff take to the floor. Mayo and Wilson were on hand at each and every matchup which also included stops in the communities of Langdon, Chestermere, Okotoks and Foothills. Mark Stephen, the voice of the Stampeders on News Talk 770, attended on many occasions for player introductions and play-by-play commentary.
