Rob Maver is heading into his eighth season as member of the Stampeders after he was Calgary’s first-round selection (fifth overall) in the 2010 draft. He has earned West division all-star honours three times and has been named a CFL all-star twice.

Maver handled the placekicking duties for the Stamps in his first CFL season and established a franchise single-season record for rookies by accumulating 185 points. When the University of Guelph product suffered a season-ending injury in the first game of the 2011 season, the Stamps signed placekicker Rene Paredes and when Maver returned in 2012, he became Calgary’s punter.

Together for five years, Maver and Paredes are tied for the third-longest-running punter/kicker tandem in franchise history, trailing only Tony Martino and Mark McLoughlin (nine years from 1992-2000) and Mike McTague and J.T. Hay (six years from 1979-84).

Maver was the Stamps’ nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award in 2014 and in 2013 he twice received the league’s special teams player of the week nod.

Let’s find out a little bit more about Rob Maver…

Who is your favourite superhero?

Can we go with Jason Bourne being a superhero? Does that count?

What is your favourite movie?

So many to choose from . . . but the Bourne series is definitely up there. And if I just want to laugh at stupid things, it’s definitely Super Troopers.

What box of cereal would you be on?

I don’t know, probably just something like oatmeal because that’s all I really eat. I’m not much of a cereal guy.

If you could sing a song on American Idol, what would it be?

My girlfriend always catches me singing along to The Guess Who whenever I have that playing so I’d have to go with “No Time” by The Guess Who.

If you were on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you?

A tent, something to purify water with and some tool to manage fire.

If you could acquire any skill, what would it be?

Probably the ability to play another position because I so desperately wish I could so something more than kick the football to the other team. But it just hasn’t been in the cards.

If you could play any other position in football, what would it be?

Oh boy, there are so many. Obviously quarterback because no punter started their career by wanting to be a punter. We just became one by necessity. I think it would also be funny to be a field corner in this league who can just play cut or blitz all the time. I think that would be a blast!

What is your favourite day of the year?

I don’t know, I’m not huge on holidays. But the last few Christmases have been pretty fun.

If you could be known as the first to discover something, like climbing Mount Everest, what would it be?

Develop the Internet.

If you could be an astronaut and fly to Mars, would you do it?

No. Heck, no. You’ve got to be so crazy to do that. No, that’s literally out of this world. I’m a calculated guy and that’s just not for me.

If you won $1 million playing the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

I would buy an appropriately valued house, obviously pay it off and then set myself up an annuity for my retirement years and continue to work.

If you became a famous rapper, what would your stage name be?

Something-Get off the stage. Because nobody would want me.

If you could host a game show, which one would it be?

What’s that one Jimmy Carr hosted?  8 Out of 10 Cats. It’s really funny!
