Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that non-import offensive lineman J’Micheal Deane has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Deane suited up for nine games in his rookie season and made starts on both sides of the ball. He recorded seven tackles during his time on the defensive line, with three of those tackles coming on Aug. 6 against Hamilton. Deane suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16 at Toronto.
“J’Micheal showed versatility last season, making the switch from offensive to defensive line and then back to the offensive line,” said Hufnagel. “It was very unfortunate that he went down to injury later in the season but J’Micheal has shown tremendous courage and determination on the road to a comeback.”
Deane’s re-habiliation has progressed well and he plans to suit up with the Stampeders when training camp opens in early June.
“I have worked hard since the injury and always had the goal of being with the team on Day 1 of training camp,” said Deane. “My progress has been good and I can’t wait to get back on the field.”
Deane was selected by the Stampeders in the third round (21st overall) of the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft. Deane played college football at Michigan State, starting all 13 games for the Spartans as a senior. He was twice named the team’s offensive lineman of the week that season and Deane helped the team to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Capital One Bowl.
Deane went to high school at Newtonbrook Secondary School in North York, Ont., and played junior football for the Metro Toronto Wildcats.
