Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import defensive linemen Markell Carter, Wayne Dorsey, Elisha Joseph and Alex Watkins have signed with the team. As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Here is a closer look at each player:
Markell Carter: Carter (six-foot-four, 248 lbs.) spent the 2011 season on the New England Patriots practice roster after being selected in the sixth round (194th overall) in the 2011 National Football League draft. Carter played collegiately at Central Arkansas and earned all-Southland Conference honours in 2010 as he made 62 tackles including a conference-leading 19 tackles for loss. He added 5.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.
Wayne Dorsey: Despite being limited to six games because of an arm injury, Dorsey (six-foot-six, 280 lbs.) led the University of Mississippi in 2011 with three sacks and five tackles for loss. He was a team captain for the Rebels. He attended training camp with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in 2012.
Elisha Joseph: Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Green Bay Packers, Joseph (six-foot-two, 290 lbs.) has also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. In college, he played four years at Temple and amassed 97 tackles, including 6.5 tackles for loss, and one sack. As a senior in 2010, he recorded a career-high 44 tackles.
Alex Watkins: After helping Alabama win the national college championship in 2011, Watkins (six-foot-three, 234 lbs.) signed with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent. In his senior season at Alabama, he played 13 games and recorded 17 tackles, including two tackles for loss, and one sack. He also had two quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. In addition to his work on defence, Watkins saw extensive duty on special teams.
In other transaction news, the club has released non-import offensive lineman Obby Khan.
