Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import receiver Marquay McDaniel has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
McDaniel played 14 regular-season games for Calgary in 2012 and was second on the team with 744 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He made 53 catches on the season and also had two carries for 15 yards, 12 punt returns for 130 yards, one kickoff return for 18 yards and one missed-field goal return for 31 yards.
The 28-year-old Virginia Beach, Va., product played in all three post-season games for the Stamps in 2012 and had 12 receptions for 220 yards and one touchdown. His score was a 68-yard catch-and-run in the opening minute of the Stamps’ 34-29 win over the BC Lions in the West Division final.
“I’m pleased that Marquay has made a long-term commitment to the team by signing this extension,” said Hufnagel. “He is a reliable veteran who was an important member of our offence in 2012 and also made valuable contributions on special teams when called upon to return kicks.”
McDaniel signed with the Stampeders on Sept. 4, 2011, and finished the 2011 campaign on Calgary’s practice roster. He spent the first two-and-a-half seasons of his CFL career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In 51 career regular-season games for Calgary and Hamilton, the Hampton University alumnus has 190 receptions for 2,490 yards and 13 touchdowns as well as 2,420 combined return yards.
“I very much enjoyed the past season and Calgary feels like home to me,” said McDaniel. “This team has great players and great coaches and that makes for a great situation. It reminds me a lot of a college atmosphere and the members of the team are like a family to me.”
