For more than two decades, the Calgary Stampeders have been dropping by school gymnasiums in and around the city to play a little basketball against student teams. basketball01_101215.jpg

The proud tradition of the Stampeders basketball program continued last winter, with the Red and White visiting nine schools in the Calgary area. The Stamps dropped by for visits to a diverse group of schools for tilts with both girls' and boys' squads.

Thank you to those schools that hosted games during the 2011 Off-Season Basketball Program hosted by New York Fries.

The 2011 season saw the continuation of a new tradition with members of the Stamps alumni association dropping in to participate — including Stamps all-time sack leader Will Johnson, 1992 Stampeders Grey Cup champions Peewee Smith and Marvin Pope and four-time Grey Cup champ Roger Reinson — proving the tradition is as strong as ever.

AM770 CHQR was back to help the program this year as Stamps play-by-play voice Mark Stephen and radio personality Dave Rowe provided commentary. The games were a must-see experience.

The season contained many great highlights which are sure to be even greater memories. From Juwan Simpson’s powerful dunks to team Chaplain Rodd Sawatszky’s game-winning three-point shot with time expiring against Father Lacombe, the host schools brought out the best in the Stampeders representatives.
