Pete Thodos, who scored the winning touchdown in the Stamps’ 12-7 triumph over Ottawa Rough Riders at Toronto to complete an unbeaten season, died on Christmas Day in his native Vancouver, his wife Marjorie confirmed on Thursday.

With Wally Buono’s recent decision to step away from the sidelines and concentrate on his duties as general manager and vice-president of football operations of the BC Lions, Calgary’s John Hufnagel is now the dean of the Canadian Football League head coaches.

Having just passed the four-year anniversary of his hiring by the Stamps — he went on the job Dec. 3, 2007 — Hufnagel noses out Montreal’s Marc Trestmas as the CFL’s longest-serving skipper by a mere 15 days.

Everyone knows that playoffs are the most exciting time of the season.

Surprisingly, there was a three-way tie in the West Division between Calgary, Edmonton and BC. Because of how things played out this season, BC snagged first place with Edmonton second. Being in third place meant no home playoff games for the Stampeders.

What an exciting season it has been! With a three-way tie in the West, this past weekend was both exciting and stressful for CFL fans everywhere. Every game had meaning for the overall standings and so we found ourselves cheering for teams like Saskatchewan and Montreal, which felt somewhat unusual.

We’ve lost some tight games this year that, in past years, we’ve been winning. So it was kind of uncharted territory when we started losing those games.

In the past three weeks, we’ve been able to finish in the fourth quarter and I think we grew as a team a little bit. We learned how to win games again.

It was a crazy game with Winnipeg tryng to come back the way they did but the Bombers didn’t get in that situation by luck. That’s a hard-working team, a resilient team, they work hard, their defence is good.

We knew it was going to be a four-quarter game. I was kind of surprised that we jumped off to the early start. But they fought back.

The Stampeders look to keep their hopes alive for a home playoff game today as they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff for the regular-season finale is at 2 p.m.

The Stamps need a win and a loss by the BC Lions against Montreal this evening to lock up second place in the West Division. That means Calgary would entertain the Leos in the West semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 13.
