STAMPS 37, BOMBERS 16 - OCT. 18
Henry Burris threw five touchdown passes, Nik Lewis broke a pair of receiving records, Brett Ralph scored twice and Calgary’s defence allowed just one touchdown in a dominant 37-16 Stampeders win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Stamps improved to 11-5 and are just one win away from clinching top spot in the Canadian Football League West Division. With a road victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Oct. 24, the Stamps will get a bye to the West Final, which will be played on Nov. 15.
Calgary moved one step closer to this goal with one of its most convincing games of 2008. Burris paced the offence with 337 yards, five scores and no turnovers. He completed 28 of 36 passes.
“It was nice to have that production from the offence,” said Burris. “We haven’t been real sharp the past few weeks, so it was good to get back on track. But this doesn’t mean anything yet. We still haven’t reached our goals.”
Burris’ first pass of the night ended up in the hands of Lewis, who recorded a reception in a club-record 86th consecutive game. He previously shared the record of 85 with Allen Pitts. Lewis later caught a 32-yard pass that put him over the 1,000-yard mark on the season. It is his club-record fifth consecutive season with 1,000 receiving yards and he finished the game with a career-high 10 catches for 100 yards.
The Stampeders opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on eight-yard touchdown catch by Ralph. The Bombers responded with a 48-yard field goal by Serna before Burris engineered a 10-play, 95-yard scoring drive. The touchdown came on a 36-yard strike to Copeland.
Later in the second quarter, Burris put together a 104-yard drive — completing five of five passes for 77 yards — that ended with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Rambo. Serna then kicked a 47-yard field goal before halftime.
With eight catches for 89 yards, Rambo increased his yardage total to 1,314 and passed B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon (1,286) for the league lead.
After being forced to concede a safety touch, the Bombers scored their first touchdown of the game in the third quarter when Ryan Dinwiddie relieved Winnipeg starter Kevin Glenn and threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant. Winnipeg’s touchdown ended Calgary’s remarkable run of 10 games without allowing a touchdown at home. As it stands, the Stamps have allowed just one in the last 12 quarters.
The Stamps responded with a five-yard touchdown pass from Burris to Teyo Johnson. Serna then kicked another field goal before Dwight Anderson intercepted Dinwiddie and set up a 10-yard major from Burris to Ralph. With his 28 completions, Burris tied Jeff Garcia at 1,249 for second place in career Stampeders completions behind Doug Flutie (1,438).
Despite the loss, Winnipeg (6-10) clinched second spot in the East Division and a home playoff game after the Toronto Argonauts (4-12) lost 43-34 to the Montreal Alouettes earlier in the day. Dinwiddie gave way to Bryan Randall, while Barrick Nealy relieved Burris.
