LEWIS SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION
Calgary Stampeders head coach/general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that receiver Nik Lewis has signed a long-term contract extension with the club.
“Nik has established himself as one of the most consistent, productive receivers in the Canadian Football League over the past five years,” said Hufnagel. “He played through injuries, made clutch catches, long gains, key blocks and played a huge role in our Grey Cup win. We’re very happy to know that he’ll be with us for years to come.”
Lewis, 26, enters his sixth season with the Red and White. He started every game for the Stamps in 2008 including the West Final and Grey Cup. The sure-handed receiver recorded career highs with 87 receptions and 10 touchdowns. With 1,109 receiving yards, he became the first player in Stamps history to record five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Lewis has caught at least one pass in 88 consecutive games in which he has appeared, breaking Allen Pitts’ mark of 85 on Oct. 18, 2008 against Winnipeg. He capped the season by tying a Stampeders Grey Cup record with 11 receptions in the championship victory in Montreal.
“I’m proud to be a part of this team. The franchise is heading in a great direction and I’m excited to be a part of it,” said Lewis. “We were able to keep the core of this team and our coaching staff together and I truly believe we have an exciting future here in Calgary.”
The Southern Arkansas product has spent his entire CFL career with the Stamps and has 383 catches for 5,748 yards and 37 scores. He was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie in 2004 and a West Division all-star in 2006 and 2007. Lewis currently sits seventh on the Stamps all-time receptions and receiving yards lists.
