PILON: This is where I want to retire

One of the things I’ve always said was that I want to finish my career here in Calgary and this extension will make that possible. It’s an honour to be able to be with one team and to be wanted for that long. To be in the same category with a Jamie Crysdale or a Jay McNeil, guys that have played their whole career with one team is special. I haven’t wanted to go anywhere else. I have a great job here with Sentury Pump Jacks, my family works here and this is where we set up roots, where we want to stay and where I want to retire.The city has always been great to me. We’ve had some ups and downs as a team, but they were always good times. I get to play a sport for a living and we’ve always had great support from the fans.
The guys have been great too. Guys like Derek (Armstrong), (Rob) Lazeo, Godfrey (Ellis) and the guys that have been here for a while make everything fun. It makes you want to come back and play. I love the game, I love to compete and it didn’t really matter who the coach was going to be this season, I just wanted to play.
Ever since I started playing professionally, I’ve always said my goal was to play 10 years. This extension will get me to that goal and then some. When you’re younger it’s OK to go team to team. But once you’re married and have a family to support, it’s not fair to them. You want to set up roots and be embraced by the community. You want to be a part and give back to the community you live in. My wife has a great job here and we want our kids to be raised here so it’s an honour to be able to do that.
My time has gone by so fast. Everyone thinks nine years is so long, but it really has gone fast. I can remember coming into Calgary midway through the year in 2000 and the next year we were winning the Grey Cup. It seemed like nothing could get better. Then we had a few years that were not quite as good, but it’s the guys I remember.
It’s your teammates and the friends I’ve made that I really remember. Some guys can remember every play, but I don’t. I remember the guys I was with, the friendships, the camaraderie and the times we had.
