BURRIS: We made too many mistakes

September 1, 2008

Number one, it just goes to show you that when two teams are evenly matched, mistakes make a big difference. Those two turnovers definitely hurt us, because they were able to turn them into 14 points.

Offensively, we have to do a much better job of finishing off drives. Early on we moved the ball consistently and early in the third quarter we got that touchdown, but we have to turn those threes into sevens. We can’t give a team like Edmonton back-to-back chances with a short field and especially once they have had a chance to see what our defence was doing and make adjustments. They had a chance to wear down our defence, when we left them on the field that long.

It’s tough to know exactly what’s happening on the field when you’re not out there, but I think we felt good. We thought we had a good bead on what they were doing and were able to get the running game going. We wanted to keep them off balance as far as running the ball inside, tosses outside and utilize quick throws for Dave. When you’re not on the field for 10-12 minutes, it can get the offence out of rhythm and that’s pretty much what happened.

I think the short week is definitely going to be a good thing. It’s kind of like the back-to-backs with Saskatchewan. We played so bad and were able to get in, look at the film right away and identify where we went wrong. This is a resilient team and we have shown that we are able to bounce back from adverse situations and I’m sure you’ll see a different team come Friday in Edmonton.

I should mention the injury real quick. It was nothing major, just my toe. I kind of got horse-collar tackled and bent my foot back. It’s just sore and I fully expect to be back on Friday.

We will be back,
Henry Burris, #1

If you don't consistantly put pressure on Ricky Ray he will pick you a part. Calgary's secondary is not looking good and when we only rushed three you could see alot of extra Calgary bodies running around but no where close to a receiver. We need to be blitzing way way more and if this doesn't change the our defensive coach needs to. Pederson was poorly covered all afternoon. Our Offensive line did a poor job of giving you protection. If we could put the pressure on Ricky Ray that Edmonton put on all three of our quarterbacks we could have won the game. I'm afraid some heads are going to have to roll with our secondary as the coverage just isn't there and hasn't been all season.

As a 50 year Stamp fan Im selfishly feeling sorry for myself as ALL the old Stamp fans do when we lose the "Classic". This game is usually a measuring stick for the balance of the year. Another loss in "The Chuck" and you ll see (hear) some unhappy fans Hank! Thats just the way it is.

I left the game a little frustrated as some fans and I'm sure some players. The two big turnovers need not of happened if challenged. In one case the receiver was out when he came down with the ball, and the other case on the kick off the player was down before the ball came out. When you have three players close to the play trying to get the coach to challenge and he lets it go it's hard on the team and fans. Come on coach you got to fight for the team and fans you still have the arm.

Hey Mike, we were all frustrated. But the calls on the turnovers were correct. On the replays, Curry's was out before he was down, and on Joffrey's it doesn't matter if he was out, he dropped the ball before he was down. Huf would have lost both those challenges. My issue was with Curry. He looks to be about half the speed of everyone else. Why not have Rambo back there again returning kicks, or even Thelwel? Really missing Howell now, and especially Joffrey if he's out for any length of time. The main issue is those were bad turnovers at costly times and took away the momentum the defense had built up. Too bad.

FYI, if on the one you were referring to the receiver on the sidelines being out of bounds, I agree totally. Yes, Browner was pushing, but Stamps was already jumping in that direction. Although that's a judgement call by the ref and I don't know if it's challengeable.
