ARMOUR: That was a big win

October 18, 2008

Tonight was a big win. We showed up in the last three weeks and have allowed one touchdown at home; right now we are playing sound football. Everybody has been coming to play.

The thing about our defence is we are always prepared. The last three teams we have faced on defence haven’t shown us anything we weren’t prepared for. Our biggest attribute to the win tonight was our preparation. When you are prepared you can run around and fly. It is all about playing without thinking, just reacting. That is what helped us play fast tonight.

Coming in our game plan was to stop the run. Winnipeg is a running team, featuring two backs. We went out to stop the run and in the second half they came out with more intensity and got some more yards on the ground.  (Winnipeg running back Joe) Smith is a downhill runner and a big target. (Winnipeg running back Fred) Reid is more of a cutback running back and he likes to let you take yourself out of the play with your momentum. But all in all we showed up and stopped the run.

The second part of our game plan was to put some hits on the quarterback. We saw three quarterbacks tonight.  We ended up getting to the third quarterback and when you can do that you must be doing something right. They say ‘when you cut the head off, the body will fall’. Every play the quarterback starts the play with the ball and we made three quarterbacks touch the ball.

We prepared for (Winnipeg quarterback Kevin) Glenn by making sure he couldn’t scramble and get out of the pocket. We wanted to keep him in the pocket and put pressure on him from a lot of different angles and different positions. Not one guy comes all the time. We had corners that blitzed, halfbacks that blitzed. Our linebackers and safeties came from all angles. And when you can do that and cover successfully, it keeps teams on their toes, because they don’t know where we are coming from. Tonight, we executed and didn’t allow the quarterbacks to look down field for his receiver.

(Winnipeg receiver Jason) Armstead got more yards than we anticipated and that is a complement to him and their special-teams. They outplayed us on the special-teams area. We didn’t fly around. We are used to returners just hitting it and with Armstead he wants to make two or three guys miss before he hits it. We didn’t anticipate that. I think our speed got the best of us because of his stop-n-go and how quick he was, he made us miss.

Personally this wasn’t my best game tonight. I had an okay game, but I expect more out of myself and I believe the coaches and my teammates expect more out of me. I made the plays I had an opportunity to make, but it just felt like there were more out there to be made.

Expect big things out of the Stampeders defence because we expect big things out of ourselves.

Just watched the Riders-Cats game, dont take those Cats lightly Jojuan, time to focus on next week. Win the big ones, you only have to win three. Hailton, west final, Grey Cup. Rest up and play the bench against BC, but dont miss your chance next week, must-wins are to much pressure for "Old Guys".

I would like to nominate Coach John Hufnegal as the Stampeders "Most Valuable Personality" for the 2008 season. I have nothing but admiration for the job that Burris, the recieving corps (take your pick),and the defence has done but Calgary's future went "south"(sorry to the American players for that Canadian expression) when Wally Buono left for B.C. It has taken that long to find a head coach /general manager of that quality. The difference in the club has been absolutly amasing. It's time that he got credit for the terrific job that he has done.

JoJuan, great game...Last year I had to sit in this province and deal with the Rider Priders goin' crazy and hearin about their certain "gut feeling" that that was their year. This time there is a change in the wind, I now have that feeling where I feel this is our year! Your intensity and aggressive passion on the field is inspiring...Thank you, Lets take the "ship in 08'... p.s. thanks for the photo ops in Regina this Summer, my son loves the photos...
