Insider: Voice of the Stamps takes night off

This business of skipping radio broadcasts, Mark Stephen quickly assures us, will not become a habit.
This coming Friday when the Red and White are in Edmonton to face the Eskimos in the Labour Day rematch, Stephen — the voice of Stampeders football for a generation —will miss his first QR77 broadcast since becoming play-by-play man in 1996.

One of the great traditions in Canadian football is renewed today at McMahon Stadium when the Calgary Stampeders entertain the Edmonton Eskimos in the ENMAX Labour Day Classic.
Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

There’s a lot of Labour Day history between the Stampeders and Eskimos, but there’s more to the Red and White’s tradition on the September holiday than the rivalry with their provincial rivals.
As a matter of fact, the first Labour Day game was the first regular-season contest the Stampeders ever played. The historic Sept. 2, 1946, game was against the Regina Roughriders at Calgary’s Mewata Stadium and the Stamps won 9-0.
