Calgary selected Walter in the fifth round (34th overall) in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft and he signed on Mar. 26, 2012. Walter attended the Stampeders’ training camp in 2011.

Walter spent five seasons (2007-11) with the University of Calgary Dinos and recorded 4,014 rushing yards. In 2011, Walter became the University of Calgary’s all-time leading rusher, moving past Elio Geremia’s mark of 3,784 yards. Walter did it with a memorable 178-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Alberta Golden Bears. In 2010, Walter earned a third straight Canada West all-star nod at running back after finishing second in the conference with 763 rushing yards. He set a new school record when he recorded his 30th career touchdown. Walter won Canada West rushing titles in 2009 (with 1,103 yards) and 2008 (904 yards). In 2009, he was named a Canada West all-star and First Team All-Canadian and was one of four Dinos Scholar Athlete scholarship winners. That season was highlighted by a career-high 259-yard performance against Regina on Sept 18. In 2008, he was Canada West’s nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding player in Canadian university football, and took home the Frank Gnup Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding player in Canada West. Walter was the Canada West rookie of the year in 2007.
Walter was an all-star running back at Calgary’s Bishop O’Byrne High School. In 2007, he was a member of Team Alberta that won the Football Canada Cup and he was named to the Canada Cup all-star team as offensive MVP. He played for Canada at the 2011 World Championship of American football in Austria, scoring six touchdowns in three games as Canada won silver. Walter was also named to the all-tournament team.
