Pro path

Calgary selected Walter in the fifth round (34th overall) in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft and signed him on May 26, 2011. Walter attended Calgary’s 2011 training camp.


Walter played in 14 games (six starts) and had 79 carries for 453 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 11 catches for 105 yards, a special-teams tackle and returned one kickoff for 17 yards. On Sept. 13, he ran in a two-point conversion. On Oct. 24, he scored his first two touchdowns of the season. On Nov. 1 he had his first career 100-yard rushing game when he ran for 109 yards. On July 24 in Edmonton he left the game in the first quarter due to injury and spent Games 5 - 7 on the injury list and Game 8 on the reserve list. Walter played in the Western Final and carried the ball four times for 16 yards. He also played in the Grey Cup and returned one kickoff for 27 yards.


Walter played 17 games (one start) and had 49 carries for 243 yards, five special-teams tackles and seven kickoff returns for 143 yards. He also caught three passes for 44 yards including a 31-yard pass from Rob Maver on a fake punt on Sept. 13 vs Hamilton. He was on the one-game injury list for Game 15. Walter also played in Western Final and had one carry for 14 yards and one catch for six yards. 


In his rookie season, Walter played 14 regular-season contests and three playoff games including the Grey Cup. He carried the ball 27 times for 191 yards for a sparkling average of 7.1 yards per rush. Walter scored his first career touchdown in the Labour Day Classic against Edmonton. His best single-game rushing total also came against Edmonton as he amassed 55 yards on just six carries in a Sept. 28 meeting with the Eskimos. Walter also had three catches for 16 yards including two receptions that set the stage for a game-winning field goal against Edmonton on Nov. 2. He also played special teams and made five tackles. Walter had one catch for 22 yards in the Grey Cup contest.

Walter spent five seasons (2007-11) with the University of Calgary Dinos and recorded 4,014 rushing yards. In 2011, Walter became the University of Calgary’s all-time leading rusher, moving past Elio Geremia’s mark of 3,784 yards. Walter did it with a memorable 178-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Alberta Golden Bears. In 2010, Walter earned a third straight Canada West all-star nod at running back after finishing second in the conference with 763 rushing yards. He set a new school record when he recorded his 30th career touchdown. Walter won Canada West rushing titles in 2009 (with 1,103 yards) and 2008 (904 yards). In 2009, he was named a Canada West all-star and First Team All-Canadian and was one of four Dinos Scholar Athlete scholarship winners. That season was highlighted by a career-high 259-yard performance against Regina on Sept 18. In 2008, he was Canada West’s nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding player in Canadian university football, and took home the Frank Gnup Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding player in Canada West. Walter was the Canada West rookie of the year in 2007. 


Walter was an all-star running back at Calgary’s Bishop O’Byrne High School. In 2007, he was a member of Team Alberta that won the Football Canada Cup and he was named to the Canada Cup all-star team as offensive MVP. He played for Canada at the 2011 World Championship of American football in Austria, scoring six touchdowns in three games as Canada won silver. Walter was also named to the all-tournament team.
