Calgary selected Berger in the fourth round (30th overall) of the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft and he signed on Jan. 30, 2013.


Berger played 18 games and registered six tackles, nine special-teams tackles and a knockdown. He also played in the Western Final where he recorded two special-teams tackles and played in the Grey Cup. 


Berger began the season on the practice roster until he was activated for one game on Sept. 13 against Hamilton and registered one tackle. He was on the reserve list for Game 12 before being placed back on the practice roster.

Berger played three full seasons for the Simon Fraser Clan. In 29 games over those three seasons, he made 87 solo tackles and 60 assisted tackles. Berger had eight interceptions including three that he returned for touchdowns. He also registered 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick. Berger served as a part-time kicker for the Clan in 2012 and connected on one field goal and 13 touchdown conversions for a total of 16 points. He was a medical redshirt in 2008 and played one game for Simon Fraser in 2009.


Berger played quarterback for Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School in Surrey, B.C., and was the province’s player of the year in 2007 and helped the Panthers reach the provincial semifinals that season. Berger also played basketball, volleyball and rugby in high school and competed in track and field.
