Calgary signed Mayo as a free agent on May 8, 2012. He signed as an unrestricted free agent with the NFL’s Denver Broncos in July of 2011 and was released on Aug. 29, 2011.
Mayo has started three games and has six tackles. He was on the injury list for Game 3.
Mayo played all 18 games and finished second on the team with 57 defensive tackles, including two tackles for a loss of two yards, nine special-teams tackles, five quarterback sacks, an interception and two knockdowns and two fumble recoveries. He recorded his first CFL interception in the final game of the season against BC. Mayo also started the Western Final where he recorded 14 tackles.
Mayo had a solid rookie season, playing in 17 regular season games and starting the West final at middle linebacker in place of the injured Juwan Simpson. Primarily used on special teams, Mayo finished the season second on the team in special-teams tackles with 15 and was a key contributor to a coverage unit that helped place the Stamps first in the league in net punting and only allowed two punt returns of more than 30 yards. Mayo also saw time at linebacker, registering nine defensive tackles, a quarterback sack and a knockdown. He recorded four defensive tackles in his first-ever playoff game and was a key part of containing running back Andrew Harris in Calgary’s victory over BC.
Mayo played his final season with Old Dominion after spending his first three seasons at Hofstra University (2007-09). Mayo was co-captain of the Old Dominion Monarchs in 2010 and recorded 70 total tackles while also leading the club with 6.5 sacks. He forced three fumbles, had three pass break-ups and blocked two kicks on special teams. He recorded five or more tackles in 10 of the Monarchs’ 11 games and had a season-high 10 tackles against Virginia Military Institute. Mayo was the first ODU grad to sign with an NFL team. In 2009 with the Hofstra Pride, Mayo had 99 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. He played all 12 games and started five in 2008 and recorded 33 total tackles. In 2007, Mayo played in nine games, recording 18 total tackles. He redshirted in 2006.
Deron played four seasons at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, Va. He was named to the All-Peninsula District First Team and All-Area Second Team as a senior after recording 74 tackles, 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception as a linebacker. Mayo earned the Will to Win Award from the high school coaching staff. He also played basketball in high school. Graduating with an Exercise Specialist degree, Deron trains athletes in Foxboro, Mass in the off-season. Mayo’s older brother, Jerod, is a Pro Bowl linebacker for the New England Patriots.
