Stamps face Riders in early showdown

It’s a battle for early-season supremacy in the West Division in Regina on Friday night as the 1-0 Calgary Stampeders face the 1-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Both teams recorded convincing victories in the opening week of the 2013 CFL season as the Stamps thumped the BC Lions 44-32 while the Roughriders were 39-18 winners over the Edmonton Eskimos.

In a high-scoring opening week of action, the Stamps’ 44 points led the way while Saskatchewan was the only team to allow fewer than 30 points.

This will be the Stamps’ second visit to Regina in 15 days as the Red and White claimed a 24-23 at Mosaic in the final week of pre-season play.

Calgary has a number of league leaders after one week of play including Jon Cornish in rushing yards (172), Charleston Hughes in sacks (three) and Jonathan Hefney in tackles (10).

Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets ranks second behind Cornish with 131 rushing yards while Roughriders defensive lineman Keith Shologan is tied for second in the CFL with a pair of sacks.

This is the 217th meeting all-time between the longtime rivals, with Calgary currently holding a 119-88-9 edge. The Stamps are 50-54-4 all-time in Regina including four wins in the five most recent visits to Mosaic Stadium.
