The 26th Senior Bowl – an annual showcase for the province’s top high-school football players – takes pace at McMahon Stadium on Monday. Kickoff is at noon.

The contest pits all-stars from the south part of Alberta – wearing Calgary Stampeders colours – against top players from the north wearing Edmonton Eskimos green and gold. Both of Alberta’s CFL teams are proud supporters of the contest.

Stampeders special-teams co-ordinator Mark Kilam played in the game in 1997 when he was a senior at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. Offensive lineman Dan Federkeil played in the game in 2001, defensive back Jeff Hecht got the call in 2003, offensive lineman Spencer Wilson was in the 2006 game and running back Matt Walter, offensive lineman Paul Swiston and receiver Anthony Parker were in the 2007 contest.

“The level of football being played in Alberta has always been very high, I’ve always said that,” said Kilam. “You grow up playing against all these guys and you develop some rivalries and your nemesis might be on the other team, but then you play together with them and you realize that you’re very similar competitors and you actually get along with them very well. But you didn’t really know them until that point.”

Kilam will be the guest speaker at Sunday’s Senior Bowl at the Red & White Club. The teams have been training at McMahon this weekend to prepare for Monday’s contest.

The concept for the contest was hatched in 1968 and the current series got under way in 1990. The site of the game alternates between Calgary’s McMahon Stadium and Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium and the series couldn’t be any closer – each side has won 12 times with one tie in 2001.
