Coaching up the kids

On a chilly Tuesday night, Bakari Grant was out on the practice field, although far from his familiar territory at McMahon Stadium.

The former Ticat and first-year Stamps receiver travelled north to the town of Innisfail to attend a minor football practice featuring 50 youth ranging from the atom, peewee and bantam levels. A collection of athletes from nearby Olds made the trip, as well.

Grant kicked things off with a brief speech on his experience as a young player in Oakland, Calif., stressing the importance of always having fun while staying committed to school in order to fulfill lofty aspirations when it comes to football.

No. 81 then demonstrated route-running techniques and visited with onlookers including parents and coaches. Other drills then followed which were designed to improve footwork, blocking and tackling skills.

Signed autograph posters were eventually distributed to conclude the two-hour session at the Innisfail High School playing field.

In nine days’ time, a significant contingent from the Innisfail Minor Football Association will be attending the Stampeders home game on Friday, Oct. 21 versus the Toronto Argonauts at 7 p.m.
