Tigers take down Stamps

The Stamps may be unbeaten on the field in 15 straight games, but they’ve now lost seven consecutive times in the gym.

Twelve Stampeders players visited the Alberta Children’s Hospital on Thursday afternoon to take on the 15 members of the Townsend Tigers in their seventh annual wheelchair football matchup.

Sporting the Red and White as part of the Every Yard Counts program were Frank Beltre, Paris Cotton, Derek Dennis, Dexter Janke, Glenn Love, Jerome Messam, Zach Minter, Rene Paredes, Anthony Parker, Brandon Smith, Jamar Wall and Ucambre Williams.

After a quick briefing on the rules, the Stamps were introduced along with their stiff competition.

Alex, Ashleigh, Breanna and Willow of the Outriders, presented by Century Downs, were also there to cheer on all participants. Ashleigh took to the floor to play with the Tigers while Willow helped out with scorekeeping duties.

A strong turnout of parents and hospital staff members could be seen on the sideline as and they also assisted with maneuvering the wheelchairs.

While smiles were plentiful on both sides throughout the fun-filled matchup, the Tigers successfully defended their home court, leading from beginning to end.

Autographs and pictures concluded the event held in the Ed Whalen Gym.
