Five things to watch at Rookie Camp

All of the Stampeders rookies will arrive at McMahon Stadium Wednesday for the start of their first CFL training camp experience.

They’ll have a lot to learn over the next couple days as they will try to get up to speed before the main training camp begins on May 28.

Here’s some things to keep an eye on during Rookie Camp:

1) FROM INDOOR TO THE CFL

Calgary made a splash in the first round of the CFL draft when they selected defensive linemen Randy Colling out of the Arena Football League. Doubling down on the AFL, the Stamps signed Colling’s teammate and 2016 AFL Rookie of the Year, Marvin Ross.

Having never played Canadian football, the transition will be something both will have to work on. But it could be harder on the Stamps top draft choice.

“It’s going to be an interesting deal, especially with Randy,” said coach Dave Dickenson during his pre-camp press conference Tuesday. “To watch film on d-lineman in the arena league, it’s almost impossible because the ball is in and out so fast. He will be surprised, I think, when he sees the dimensions of our field. Hopefully he comes in here and presses our guys.”

As for Ross, a defensive back, he may actually have fewer problems adapting to the Canadian game because of his experience in the AFL.

“DB-wise, I think people in the arena cover downhill motion, cover good receivers, so I think there is more of a transition there,” said Dickenson.

2) JOBS ON THE O-LINE

During coach Dickenson’s press conference, he noted that jobs were available on the offensive line, especially considering the departure of Derek Dennis and the retirement of Karl Lavoie.

After drafting Felix Gacusana in the fifth round of the CFL draft, the Stamps went out and signed four offensive linemen to create competition. Devonte Danzey, Mike McQueen, Justin Renfrow and Nick Ritcher all spent time in the NFL before deciding to bring their talents up north.

“What we’ve done this year, we’ve decided to have more American competition,” Dickenson said. “In saying that, we’re not specifying that it has to be a tackle. We probably will play one, but certainly a center or guard spot is available.”

With the head coach letting it be known that jobs are up for grabs, keep an eye on these big men as they compete to protect Bo Levi Mitchell.

3) BACK-UP QB

During the off-season, Calgary traded back-up quarterback Drew Tate to the Ottawa RedBlacks.

The team added Mitchell Gale to the mix and it seemed to be that he would battle Andrew Buckley for the back-up QB role.

But they’ll have one more guy to compete with — Ricky Stanzi.

“For Ricky, it’s more about — we’re not bringing in this raw rookie. We feel that he’s got more than enough talent and experience to potentially be a back-up right away,” said Dickenson. “We will see how he handles our system, the calls, the new defences, the quicker time clock, and new rules. Lots of things he has to learn, but we feel that we’ve got a guy that can do that.”

Having been with six NFL teams (Chiefs, Texans, Giants, Lions, Browns, Jaguars), Stanzi has seen a thing or two and with his physical gifts (6-foot-4, 228 lbs.), there’s no reason to think the veteran couldn’t come in and earn a job right away.

4) RECEIVERS

Last season, the Stamps found a diamond in the rough with DaVaris Daniels and they’ll be hoping for more of the same this season.

“We like all of the guys we have,” stated Dickenson. “But if you look at our receiving corps, I think you’ll … you’ll find some guys there that will step up.”

Interestingly, Dickenson specifically mentions Julan Lynch, the Stamps second-round selection. But he’s just one of a number of receivers attending camp.

The others who will be at rookie camp are Reggie Begelton, A.J. Cruz, Darius Davis and Marken Michel.

“I’m excited about a couple that I saw in Florida,” said Dickenson. “Of course, I only saw them in non-contact drills, so you never know. But I think we’ve got a chance to have a guy or two step up and be a long-time Stampeder.”

That’s a big prediction from the Stamps head coach. And if he’s excited about this rookie class of receivers, you should be too. Make sure to watch out for these guys at camp.

5) GETTING UP TO SPEED

While certain players may warrant more attention due to job availability or draft status, everyone at camp is there for the same reason: to make the team.

Over the course of the two-day rookie camp, the biggest thing to watch is how well players can learn and understand the teams’ playbook and concepts.

“We do things differently than a lot of other teams,” Dickenson explained. “Our mini-camp down in Florida is an evaluation camp. It’s not about teaching the playbook, the system, it’s not about who can digest that information. That’s what we do for rookie camp and training camp.”
