Jabari eager to learn

Who does Jabari Arthur think will give him the hardest time during training camp?

“Out of the receivers? Probably Anthony Parker,” decides Arthur. “We’ve got some jokes stemming back from when we were playing together. But probably Rene (Paredes) will give me the hardest time in the locker-room, that’s for sure.”

The former receiver – who played seven seasons with the Red and White – is making his return to the club as a guest coach for training camp.

Two days into rookie camp, Arthur has gotten his feet wet with a handful of practices and time in the meeting room.

“When I was playing, I thought we had a great coaching staff and the feeling hasn’t changed,” says Arthur. “I think it’s a great opportunity that I have to be working with such a great coaching staff and I have the benefit of knowing most of them already so I think it’s going awesome. I’m learning something every moment I’ve been here.”

After spending time in the off-season working with head coach Dave Dickenson at his passing camp, along with being named the Calgary Dinos receivers coach on April 28, Arthur approached the Stamps about the possibility of helping out at training camp.

“I thought it would be a good opportunity if I came back and learned from the best, pretty much,” says Arthur. “When I asked them, they reached back out to me and said, ‘Sure. If that’s what you really want to do, then we’ll invite you to camp.’ So here I am.”

Arthur knew he wanted to make a career in football ever since he first played the game back in 1989. After his playing days ended following  the 2015 season, he knew he still wanted to stay involved in the game.

“I didn’t know which way I was going to get into it but I knew I wanted to be around football and an opportunity came up in coaching and definitely jumped right on it,” says Arthur about his new job at U of C. “And hopefully I’ll be able to continue this for a while.”

Arthur has been with the Dinos for almost a month and already feels right at home.

“The good thing about the Dinos is they remind me a lot of this coaching staff where it’s very family-oriented coaching staff,” admits Arthur. “I’ve been learning something new over there every single day as well. I think the Calgary Dinos are going to be Calgary’s best-kept secret in terms of they’re a really good football team, a really good organization. I’m really looking forward to working with them, learning some stuff over here and applying it to them and hopefully help them win some more games.”

But for now he’s concentrating on the task at hand. After a couple of days working with rookies, the veteran players will join the group as main camp opens on Sunday.

“I think that’s going to be interesting because I still talk to the guys and have relationships with them but the good thing about that is they’re vets and they know they’re here to get better,” says Arthur. “I’m going to do my best to help them get better. And because they are vets, we’ll have a mutual respect that that’s what we’re here for.”
