Time To Step Up For Law

Natural ability only goes so far.

But in the case of defensive linemen Cordarro Law, it was all he needed to record three sacks in four games at the end of the 2016 CFL season.

“I definitely get a heads-up this time,” said Law at training camp Sunday. “I came in at the end of the season last year. I didn’t really know the plays and I was playing off of natural ability. But now I know the plays, I know the system. I’m with the guys, I know what they like to do. I think I’ve got to step up.”

With some big names locking down the other side of the line, Law – who previously played for the Stamps in 2012 and 2013 before heading to the NFL – knows he needs to bring it this season.

“We’ve got what, a couple all-stars on the line?” Law said referring to Charleston Hughes and Micah Johnson.  “Those guys are ballers. It’ll be a bad thing if I don’t come in and hold up my own on the other side. Those guys are going to do their thing, so it all falls on me on the other side.”

And if Law can keep up his 2016 production, he would be a dangerous defensive weapon for the Stamps. If you pro-rate Cordarro’s sack total from last season, he would have reached 13.5, which would have been in the top five in the CFL.

Law was signed by the Stamps on Sept. 28, 2016, as a free agent and would go on to suit up for four regular-season games, the Western Semi-Final, and the Grey Cup.

Having lost in two Grey Cups in his career, Law has set one goal for the upcoming season.

“All I want is a ring,” stated the 6-foot-2, 247 lb. lineman.

“Whatever the team needs to do to win, I want to win a championship. I lost two of them since I’ve been here. I really want a championship just to get that feeling in me. Whatever the team needs me to do, I’m willing to do it.”

First up on the long road to a championship is June 6 when the Stamps host the BC Lions in their first pre-season game.

“It’s the first time we see action, it’s the first time we get to go against another group of guys,” Law said. “It’s just one step. The Grey Cup is the team’s ultimate goal, but you’ve still got to play all the games before you get to the Grey Cup. You can’t cut corners. Tuesday night will be the start of it.”

BC is a familiar foe for Law.

The Whitfield, Ala., native has been getting to Lions QBs since 2012, when he recorded his first ever sack on Travis Lulay on Oct. 26.

“I remember that sack,” said Law. “It was a second-half sack. Mace was playing then, Charleston [Hughes], and [DeVone] Claybrooks was the d-line coach. We had a little wager, the first guy to get a sack — I think they had a two hundred dollar sack pot, and I still haven’t got all the money from it. I still remember my first sack against BC.”
