Kohlert going back to where it started

It’ll be familiar territory, except for the whole ‘other-side-of-the-field’ thing for Rory Kohlert Friday night.

The Stampeders receiver will dress for the first time this season in Red and White when the team travels to Manitoba to take on Winnipeg in the third game of their 2017 regular-season schedule.

Kohlert spent five seasons with the Blue Bombers prior to signing as a free-agent with the Stamps this past off-season and is looking forward to the return trip to a place he called home from 2012-2016.

“It’ll be fun, they always have a good atmosphere and I am looking forward to it,” Kohlert said. “Whatever the team needs me to do to win the game I’m willing to do. If they need me to play some snaps on offence, I am ready to play and if some balls come way I’ll be excited for sure.”

After spending all of his CFL career with one club, the adjustment for the 29-year-old was big: new city, new team and new system.

Still, Kohlert said he has enjoyed every minute of his time in Calgary, both on and off the field.

“It’s a great city, there’s a lot to do. It’s really nice here, I have some friends who live here which help and it’s just been all good,” Kohlert said. “I’ve been settling pretty well so far. Obviously it takes time to settle in with new guys, new city and different playbook but I am feeling comfortable as each week passes and just ready to go.”

During his CFL career, the Regina native has racked up 160 receptions for 1,913 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 12 yards per catch. He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2014, when he finished the campaign with 44 receptions for 594 yards and three touchdowns, which was highlighted with six catches for 76 yards against the Stamps.

Even with those solid numbers, Kohlert says the change of scenery has been good for his game.

“With different coaches, they teach things differently,” Kohlert explained. “Running certain routes you pick up little things to make yourself a little better. They’re going to give you little points here and there to help you further improve your game.”

And his ultimate goal here is the same as it’s been his entire career: to hoist the Grey Cup.

“I want to win,” he said. “Everyone wants to win. I just want to get better every day and help the team win in any way that I can and go get a ring.”
