Williams on quite a run!

A relative unknown to Stamps fans until the team’s home-opener on June 29, Terry Williams has shown to be a speedy solution in more ways than one.

Not only was he already at the Stampeders’ disposal as a member of the practice squad, but since being inserted into the lineup for Week 2, Williams has been able to display his high-quality quickness with the ball in his hands.

The recent two-game absence of return man Roy Finch opened the door for the first-year running back to make his debut and apply his skillset to both the offensive and special-teams units.

Fortunately for No. 38, his attention to detail and intent observation of both Finch and tailback Jerome Messam helped eased his transition from the sideline to the huddle.

“It was really important,” Williams remarked regarding his start to the season before being activated. “It was really essential for me to be able to come out and play fast the first two games because the first game I didn’t play. I got to watch Mess, Roy and everyone else do their thing. Then they’ve helped me out so I could be ready to fill in and do what I had to do.”

With a pair of appearances now under his belt, the 25-year-old has made four receptions for 74 yards and returned seven kickoffs for 167 yards. His 23.9-yard average when fielding the ball off the opposing team’s tee is good for fourth in the CFL through three weeks.

“We got the win both times so that’s all I care about,” responded Williams in an instant. “I just feel like I’m just going out there and trying to play fast and listen to everything and follow my rules with the playbook and everything else. But as long as we get the win, that’s what’s most important to me.”

Already turning heads for the rapid fashion in which he operates, 71 of those 74 receiving yards have been accumulated after the catch.

“That’s what a lot of people tell me,” Williams shared when asked whether his speed is his most dangerous weapon. “I just try to play my game and just try to keep playing fast. That’s what the coaches preach, so I try to play as fast as I possibly can within the confines of the offence.”

Only a single rushing attempt has been credited to him thus far, but the former second-team all-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all-star – who set a school record in 2015 with a 98-yard run – promises to fully accept his role as it continues to take form.

Finch is eligible to return against the Alouettes on Friday and Messam continues to rule the backfield for the Red and White but perhaps Williams’ recent outings will be enough to keep him in the mix come game day.

“I’m just trying to make sure I’m paying attention to all the details and just keep focusing because I’m the next man up,” stressed the versatile Williams who spent time with the NFL’s Jets and Giants in 2016 after going undrafted. “I’ll follow Roy, support him, support Messam, support everybody and make sure all of my teammates are ready. And I’ve got to make sure I stay ready no matter what.”
