Messam, Hughes named CFL players of the week

A pair of Calgary Stampeders – running back Jerome Messam and defensive lineman Charleston Hughes – have been honoured as Canadian Football League players of the week for their play in Saturday’s 27-10 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Messam is the league’s top player of the week after recording his first 100-yard rushing game of the season and the 13th of his career. He had 28 carries for 135 yards and one touchdown and also had one reception. Messam leads the CFL through five weeks of action with 323 rushing yards.

Meanwhile, Hughes returned from a two-game absence to record three sacks against the Roughriders and earn the league’s No. 3 player-of-the-week honour. The veteran defensive end also had three tackles in the contest and was part of a defensive group that shut out Saskatchewan in the first half and held the Riders to 38 rushing yards for the game.

Hughes now has 92 sacks in his career and is in sole possession of 13th place on the CFL’s all-time list.

Messam and Hughes are the first Stamps players this season to receive player-of-the-week recognition from the league.
