Michel puts on a show

A new M&M’s confectionary hit the market Saturday night.

Mitchell & Michel.

A football eye candy designed to satisfy every sweet tooth. And, best of all, only comes in Red-and-White.

“Actually, I feel a little bit sorry for him,” confessed pitch-and-catch partner Bo Levi Mitchell of Marken Michel’s blockbuster performance Saturday night. “Brought down twice on the one-yard line like that.

“I mean, a step this way or a step that way, he easily could’ve had three touchdowns and over 200 yards.

“Man, the way he stepped up, though. It’s not a surprise. He’s a gamer.

“It’s good see Marken get in there and do what he did.”

Sifting through the debris field of a 60-1 evisceration of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Stampeders could number more superheroes than the Marvel comicbook universe.

The pint-sized stick of blasting gelatin, Roy Finch.

The human battering ram, Jerome Messam.

The thieving, endzone-seeking DB Shaquille Richardson.

The efficient backup quarterback, Andrew Buckley.

A defensive collective that limited the Ticat attack to a rouge.

They all donned capes and tights on a memorable Legacy Night out at McMahon Stadium.

But Michel, he topped ’em all.

It was a near-perfect evening.

Near-perfect performance.

In the absence of the nicked-up Kamar Jorden and with ’92 Grey Cup-winning pass-catching heroes Dave Sapunjis, Peewee Smith and Carl Bland in the house, the freshman wideout – with DaVaris Daniels shifted inside to slot – grabbed his unexpected opportunity and shook it for all it was worth.

“Unfortunately K.J. went down,’’ said Michel afterwards. “You never want to see a friend, a teammate, hurt. Hopefully it’s not bad. But coach preaches next man up. You’ve got to have that mentality.

“So I went out and showcased my abilities.”

The Michel stat line was certainly eye-catching: 6 snares, 190 yards (a preposterously high 31.7-yard average) and a TD.

But there was no chest-pounding on buttons-popping post game.

“I’m not a big stats guy,’’ Michel said. “It’s funny, somebody on the sideline asked me: ‘How many yards you got?’ I was like: ‘Gee, I dunno.’

“I’ve never been that guy who kept track, who can list off his numbers. I feel stats will take care of themselves if you take care of your game.

“God, he makes no mistakes. Everything happens for a reason. I’ll get my 200 one day. Today was my 190 day. I’m gonna take it and I’m going to enjoy it.”

Not bad, however, for a guy who started the season on the practice roster after spending two and a half weeks there last season. A guy who had two catches for 37 yards and one touchdown coming into the Tiger-Cat clash.

Michel’s first half was one to remember.

Latching onto a Mitchell offering, he slipped past a defender near the left sideline for a 40-yard gain, setting up the first of Messam’s three touchdowns, from a yard away.

A 60-yard reception down to the goal-line led to another Messam TD plunge.

Then, 49 seconds from the intermission, the pièce de résistance, Mitchell, stepping to his right, lofting a pass into the near corner off the end zone from 35 yards away.

Timing his leap like LeBron hauling down a vital offensive board, Michel swiped the ball away from Ticat defensive back Justin Rogers to put the Stamps up 39-1 at halftime.

“It was a great ball,’’ argued Michel. “One of those balls you gotta go up and squeeze.

“It always feel good as a first-year guy when your quarterback has trust, has confidence, that you can make a play.”

Just to prove he doesn’t play favourites, Michel made three more catches in the second half collaborating with Buckley.

In terms of discussing his evening’s work as a “breakout” display, the 24-year-old UMass product didn’t sound overly impressed.

“Naw. Not at all. I don’t think I’ve arrived or anything like that. There’s always work to be done. No matter how many yards I had today, I guarantee I watch film the next day and I’ll always find mistakes.

“You never want to get complacent. You always want to strive to be the best you can be.

“I can be better. I will be better.

“So today is not by any means my ‘arrival’ date. Not at all.

“That’s something I’m still striving for.”
