About last night …

Here’s a closer look at Thursday’s 41-24 victory over the Argos at Toronto’s BMO Field:

Cruising into the bye: After an inconsistent 2-1-1 start to the 2017 campaign, the Stamps head into their first bye week on a three-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 128-35 in the process.

This marks the 13th consecutive season Calgary has posted a victory streak of at least three games. The next longest such run belongs to Edmonton with four years in a row (2014-17) followed by BC with two (2016-17).

Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Montreal all have a chance to join BC at two in a row if they can put together a three-game winning streak this season.

Lighting up the scoreboard: The Stamps are back in the groove in large part because they are putting up points at a prodigious pace. In back-to-back wins over Hamilton and Toronto, for example, Calgary has scored 101 points.

It’s the first time the Stamps have cracked the 100-point mark in a two-game span since 2010 when they scored a combined 104 points in consecutive games against Edmonton (56) and BC (48).

Calgary leads the CFL with 254 points scored and a points differential of plus-109.

Many happy returns: Going into the 2017 season, Roy Finch already held a place of honour in the Stampeders record book as a year ago he set a franchise single-season mark with 993 return yards.

Well not only is he threatening to eclipse his own record – he has 514 punt-return yards in 2017 with 11 games yet to play – Finch has made several more entries in the Red and White archives after back-to-back big-time performances.

A week ago against Hamilton, he returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown, the second-longest such play in team history (trailing only Jessie Branch’s 105-yarder all the way back in 1964). Then, Thursday in Toronto, Finch bumped his return against the Ticats to third spot as he took a Lirim Hajrullahu punt back 103 yards for a major.

So in a span of less than a week, Finch had two punt-return scores equaling exactly 200 yards.

The dynamo had a total of 164 yards on seven punt returns against the Argos, a Stampeders record for a road game and the second-best single-game total by a Calgary player, trailing only Marvin Coleman’s 181 yards in a 1994 contest against BC.

Finch is the first Stamps player to have multiple punt returns for a touchdown in the same season since Wane McGarity had a pair during the 2003 campaign. Only three other Stamps – Derrick Crawford, who holds the record with three in 1990, Peewee Smith in 1991 and Coleman in 1999 – have returned at least two punts all the way in a single season.

With three career punt-return majors in 21 games as a Stamp, Finch trails only Coleman (five) and Crawford and Smith (four apiece).

And finally, with 1,507 punt-return yards in a Stamps uniform, Finch has cracked the top 10 all-time in franchise history. With his output in Toronto, Finch moved ahead of Crawford and Tom Forzani (1,461 yards) for 10th place and is 48 yards back of Harvey Wylie (1,555) for ninth spot.

All aboard the Messam Train: Coming off a season that featured a rushing title and the Most Outstanding Canadian award, tailback Jerome Messam got off on the wrong foot in 2017.

Through his first four games, Messam averaged just 3.9 yards a carry. The absolute low point was a Week 4 game against Montreal when he had four carries for one measly yard and was ejected for his role in an end-zone skirmish late in the first half when the Alouettes returned a Messam fumble for a touchdown.

Since that night, Messam has been on track with 302 yards in three games and an average of 6.2 yards per tote. After just one rushing touchdown through his first four games, he has five scores in the past three and leads the CFL with six scores on the ground.

Messam also carries a 147-yard lead over BC’s Jeremiah Johnson heading into the remainder of Week 7 action as he tries to defend his rushing crown.
