Daniels breaks out

History has repeated itself.

It was a year ago that DaVaris Daniels came off to practice roster to establish himself as one of the most dynamic receivers in the CFL and an important part of the Stampeders offence.

After a relatively modest start to the 2017 season, Daniels was waiting for the game where he could break out with a monster performance.  That came on Saturday at McMahon Stadium in the Stamps’ 23-7 victory over the Toronto Argonauts.

Daniels finished with a game-high 114 yards on eight receptions, and found the end zone twice.

“I’m really happy, it’s about time,” Daniels said. “I want to go out there and perform any chance I can get.

“Bo (Levi Mitchell) did a good job of finding me out there and we had a good game plan and executed it on offence.”

On both scores, Daniels had an Argos defender draped all over him and yet somehow was able to come away with the football.

“It’s something that we’ve actually practised,” Daniels said. “As receivers, we’ve always preached about making tough catches and work on them in practice so we’re prepared for those situations.”

Once Daniels made the adjustment from wide receiver to slotback – he changed positions after an injury to Kamar Jorden – it was likely only a matter of time before Daniels busted out.

“For me, playing a new position is a bit of a changeup,” Daniels said. “You have a different assignments every week and now I’m getting used to it and trying to execute to the best of my abilities.”

With his big game, the 24-year-old Vernon Hills, Ill., product brought his season totals to 492 yards on 32 receptions with four touchdowns.

His first touchdown of the game on Saturday came at a pivotal moment as the Argos scored the first points of the game on a 115-yard interception return. The score seemed to give the Stamps a much-needed spark.

“We needed it as an offence,” said Daniels, “and, as a team we needed that to get going. I was just happy to be the one to make that play.”

Daniels even had a little fun with his performance, noting he’d been taking some heat from fantasy football players for his ordinary production earlier in the season.

“I hope they’re happy with me after that game,” he laughed.
