Four members of the Calgary Stampeders are West Division finalists for 2017 Canadian Football League awards.

Calgary’s award finalists are Alex Singleton (Most Outstanding Defensive Player), Roy Finch (Most Outstanding Special Teams Player), Marken Michel (Most Outstanding Rookie) and Dave Dickenson (Coach of the Year).

The award finalists are determined through a vote by the Football Reporters of Canada and CFL head coaches. The winners will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 23 during Grey Cup week festivities in Ottawa.

Here is a closer look at the Stampeders’ nominees:

Alex Singleton (Most Outstanding Defensive Player): Singleton established a CFL record for most tackles in a season by a Canadian and team marks for most defensive tackles and most total tackles in a season. He is a West Division all-star and was also the Stamps’ nominee for Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian. Singleton started all 18 games at middle linebacker and accumulated 123 tackles including four tackles for a loss, two special-teams tackles, four sacks, 12 quarterback pressures, one interception, one forced fumble and four knockdowns. He was named one of the CFL’s players of the week for Week 11 after a career-high 13-tackle performance against Edmonton in the Labour Day Classic and was honoured again in Week 13 after an 11-tackle, one-sack effort against BC. In Weeks 11-13, he became the first player in CFL history to record at least 10 tackles in three consecutive games. Singleton was voted the CFL’s top player of the month for September.

Roy Finch (Most Outstanding Special Teams Player): Finch tied a franchise single-season record with three punt-return touchdowns and beat his own mark for most punt-return yards in a season. He finished the season with 1,200 punt-return yards, the third-best total in league history. Also, Finch’s average of 16.4 yards on punt returns is the third-best figure all-time in the CFL and his 103-yard punt return against Toronto in Week 7 was the second-longest punt return in Stamps history. Despite missing a total of five games this season, Finch had 1,914 return yards, a figured which included 696 yards on kickoffs and 18 on missed field goals. In addition to his special-teams work, he contributed 114 rushing yards, 133 receiving yards and a two-point conversion catch. He is a West Division all-star.

Marken Michel (Most Outstanding Rookie): Michel played 13 games, accumulating 41 catches for 780 yards and three touchdowns and two carries for 11 yards. His average of 19.0 yards per reception was the best in the CFL. Michel also returned three kickoffs for 57 yards. He was named a CFL player of the week for Week 6 when he had six receptions for 190 yards and one touchdown. The yardage total was the highest by a Stamps receiver since Romby Bryant’s 211-yard game in 2009.

Dave Dickenson (Coach of the Year): In his second season as head coach, Dickenson guided the Stamps to first place in the West Division and the CFL’s best record for a second year in a row. The Stamps were 13-4-1 in 2017 and have a 28-6-2 record for an .806 winning percentage over the past two seasons. Calgary had a league-best 11-game winning streak and had the CFL’s best record both at home (7-2) and on the road (6-2-1). Dickenson also serves as the Stamps’ offensive coordinator, guiding a unit that finished second in the CFL with an average of 29.1 points scored per game. Calgary allowed a league low of 349 points this past season.
