Calgary Stampeders safety Joshua Bell is the 2017 winner of the Herm Harrison Memorial Award.

The award, which was instituted in 2013, annually honours a Stampeders player who distinguishes himself in the field of community service. One of the franchise’s all-time greats, Herm Harrison played for the Stampeders from 1964-72 and was a West Division all-star on six occasions and a CFL all-star three times. Harrison settled in Calgary after his playing career and was an active member of numerous community activities as an alumnus.

“It’s an honour to receive the Herm Harrison Memorial Award,” said Bell, a veteran of six CFL seasons including the past four with the Stampeders. “I’m so passionate about being a factor in the community I was raised in. That’s because I’m so grateful to the people who helped mold me, and now I’m just trying my best to positively affect the next generations. It has become my calling in life to help children in my community.”

Bell is actively involved as a mentor to young men and women and also provides financial assistance to low-income families. Since 2009, he’s been a volunteer track coach at his alma mater – Skyline High School in Dallas – and offers guidance and moral support to young athletes. He’s also provided coaching to track athletes in Calgary.

In 2015, Bell started an annual charity flag football program involving approximately 100 kids from Dallas-area schools and uses the event as an opportunity to mentor the youngsters.

The same leadership qualities Bell demonstrates in the community are also apparent in the football locker room. He has consistently provided guidance to the Stamps’ young cornerbacks and this season Bell was voted by teammates to serve as one of the team captains.
