Stan Schwartz – Heart of a Champion Award Winners

2017 Stan Schwartz Award winners Aidan Miele (Notre Dame), Caden Shannon (Bishop Carroll) and Daymon Cada (Forest Lawn)

The Calgary Stampeder Football Club will recognize the three recipients of the 2017 Stan Schwartz – Heart of a Champion Awards with a halftime ceremony during Sunday’s Western Final at McMahon Stadium.

This year’s winners are local high school senior football players who were nominated by their respective coaches. Contributions to their team off the field as well as their school and community, in addition to athletic and personal perseverance, are the criteria for this prestigious award which was introduced in 2009.

The following players have been selected for their outstanding achievements:

Division I: Aidan Miele, Notre Dame High School
Division II: Caden Shannon, Bishop Carroll High School
Division III: Daymon Cada, Forest Lawn High School

 

Former Stampeders executive vice-president Stan Schwartz will be on-field during the ceremony to present each student-athlete with a personalized plaque and a commemorative trophy for their school to display.

Aidan Miele – Notre Dame High School

  • Stars at linebacker as well as on special teams as a team captain for the Pride
  • Volunteers at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church
  • Coaches special education students through Special Olympics and the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association
  • Assists with school events such as bottle drives, silent auction and annual golf tournament
  • Named to the honour roll each semester at Notre Dame

Caden Shannon – Bishop Carroll High School

  • Plays linebacker and on the Cardinals’ special-teams unit after transitioning from safety
  • Voted team captain for the second consecutive season
  • Named a recipient of the Nathan Hornburg Memorial Award, given to a player displaying the same qualities of unsung heroism and the pursuit of excellence as the fallen Canadian soldier and former
  • Bishop Carroll student for whom the award is named
  • Recently served as the emcee for Bishop Carroll’s Remembrance Day ceremony
  • Currently maintains an academic average of over 85 per cent and is a coach for the Calgary Bulldogs minor football team

Daymon Cada – Forest Lawn High School

  • A defensive back who did not begin playing football until his Grade 10 season
  • Considered by all to be a leader on the field and in the classroom
  • Placed third in Alberta’s high school wrestling championships last year and also excels in rugby
  • Highly involved in Forest Lawn’s leadership class, sports medicine program and yearbook committee while also assisting with the organization of many school events
  • Maintains an 87 per cent academic average
